Lien 1928, a patisserie loated in Hotel Gajoen Tokyo―which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year―is now selling a new folded paper crane chocolate.
The product was released on September 1 and is the next chocolate released by patisserie chef Takeya Shouno serving as a follow up to their previously released temari ball chocolates.
The hotel is offering two different products: the Folded Crane Chocolate & Ceiling Painting Chocolate Set and the Meoto Folded Crane Chocolate. The paper crane is made of dark chocolate and looks so much like a paper crane you wouldn’t think it’s chocolate.
Pastry chef Shouno was inspired to make the chocolate to welcome to coming new era of Japan as next year the emperor will abdicate, meaning the Heisei Period will come to a close. He used the flax-leaf pattern to represent customers at Hotel Gajoen Tokyo. It took him one year of trial and error to get the design perfect and paper thin.
The chocolate cranes are also sat atop a white chocolate stage and sat before a white chocolate folding screen. The stage is also made with white sesame seeds, sesame oil and soybean to create a rich and sweet flavour and fragrance.
If you’re looking for a fancy Japanese souvenir then what better than chocolate paper cranes?

Hotel Gajoen Tokyo is a gorgeous comprehensive hotel and museum which rebranded itself in April 2017 and is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.
The establishment has prepared a special selection of two delicious gifts which are sold at the hotel's patisserie Lien 1928 and have been officially recognised by Secretary of Dining which is managed by Gurunavi.
The first treat is the Chikurin ('bamboo thicket') chocolates made to look like decorative ceiling paintings. These are popular chocolates made by pastry chef Takeya Shono which are served at the hotel's patisserie Lien 1928 on the first floor where they sell sweets and other foods.
Ever since it was established in 1928, it has recreated decorative ceiling art found at Japanese museums and also in hotels, as well as intricate designs and patterns seen in Japanese paintings.
The second gift snack is baked and is called Iro-Dori. It includes three popular powdered cakes which have been made with hard-to-get premium matcha from Ome in Tokyo. It also includes a variety of baked biscuits and other sweets.
This selection of snacks is a showcase by Secretary of Dining, one of Japan's biggest secretary service support sites managed by Gurunavi. Their products have received much praise especially amongst secretaries as their gift snacks cater towards the business scene.
Lien 1928 offers unique sweets inspired by the beauty of Japan. Why not pick some up yourself?

Kobe is filled with famous sightseeing spots like the nostalgic Ijinkan neighborhood and port. The city is packed with fashionable shops and restaurants and is highly regarded for its selection of tasty sweets! The port city, with over 150 years of history, has fostered a unique and diverse culinary culture. Recently, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu began starring in a series of promotional videos for the Gastropolis Kobe project. The artist traveled to the city to partake in plenty of delicious treats, and MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON went along for the ride! Here are some of the singer's favorite spots around town.
Kobe, known as a city where East meets West, is lined with sweets shops that are unique to the area. The tea salon TOOTH TOOTH Dekoboko Sabo opened in 2019 in the Kobe City Museum and offers a menu that mixes Western food and sweets with tea and ingredients from traditional Japanese cuisine. Kyary ordered the Dekoboko Sabo Afternoon Tea Set, a collection of western sweets blended with the essence of traditional Japanese flavors. Guests are invited to enjoy their tea and sweets in a one-of-a-kind space filled with Meiji period flare and retro Western furniture. Those interested will need to make a reservation, so be sure to remember the next time you’re in Kobe. Kobe MILK is known nationwide for its Apricot Pudding, which is made with local ingredients. The raw apricot pudding is mixed with milk brought from the foot of Mt. Rokko and other ingredients from Hyogo Prefecture. Of course, Kyary ordered some, and was amazed by its fluffy texture. You can only enjoy it in Kobe–also, the shop sells other puddings mixed with seasonal fruits, so don’t miss those either! Guests are surrounded by greenery, and the Western-style building is incredibly elegant. The Strawberry Mille-feuille Kyary ordered was created by an expert patissier and based on the strawberry mille-feuille recipe from the legendary French restaurant Maxim’s de Paris in Ginza. A generous amount of custard cream complements the crispy pie crust and enhances the sweetness of the fresh strawberries. We’d recommend it with a glass of champagne–if you’re of age. Filled with traditional Japanese aesthetics, the location is now filled with art and pieces of cultural significance. A number of special exhibitions are held throughout the year.
