“Music crosses borders; I want to perform throughout various countries.”
――Is there anything you’re looking to do for today’s performance?
Yano: At WWW, people are packed quite close together, and the lights are bright, so I want to give an at-home kind of performance. It would make me really happy if people enjoy the show.
kz: There are all kinds of artists playing here today from a wide range of different genres, so not knowing what kind of people will be coming to see us is really something to look forward to.
――Tell us the key highlights of your clothes today.
Yano: This coordinate is something one of our dancers kindly put together for me. My legs are exposed with this long skirt which made from materials that make it look transparent so you can really tell I’m moving. And my top is light too. We’re performing live, so it’s all light and easy to move in. They made it for me in a way that I can really move about.
――Your hairstyle is gorgeous too.
Yano: I did my hair myself, I always do. I did my best to replicate a style that my hair & make-up artist taught me today.
kz: You did a really good job.
Yano: I like styling my hair. It was a lot of fun.
――kz, do you have anything you want to point out about your clothes today?
kz: Me!? Am I doing this too? (laughs). I’ve been wearing a lot of white recently. Yano wears a lot of white, but comparatively I like to wear all-black. I had an outfit that my friend who is a stylist put together for me, and that’s what I’ve brought with me today. It’s been a while since I wore it.
――Do you ever discuss your outfits together?
kz: Our outfits are relatively set in stone.
Yano: But when we want to change the entire outfit, we’ll talk with everyone.
――The first half of 2016 is almost over, but what are your aims and outlook for the future?
Yano: I’d like to join the Honolulu Marathon in December.
kz: You’re not picking something musical!? (laughs)
Yano: I ran in a 10km marathon the other day, and I kind of came to realise the charm of running them. I’ve still only run 10km, but I’d like to work hard and practice in time for December so that I can run the whole thing. Honolulu… it seems like a gamble, but saving up money to go and run is my objective for this year!
kz: Even if you don’t run a full marathon, it really is bad if you don’t exercise. Your body becomes less capable as you grow older. It would suck not being able to eat roast tonkatsu (laughs). You have to look after your body. Bouldering looks like fun, and I also like swimming. I think I’d like to exercise this year for sure. I say that I’m going to do it every year but I never do, so this will be the year!
――Yano, have you always done lots of exercise?
Yano: Occasionally, but I’ve never run a full marathon before, so I want to work towards completing that 42km!
kz: I don’t want to get dragged into it at all (laughs). Well, maybe I could do 10km. A full marathon really is something though. If I get dragged into it, my whole body would crack and I wouldn’t be able to make songs anymore. Because physical strength is really important for vocals. I think it will be really good for Yano to cultivate from it.
――Tell us about your musical aims and outlooks.
Yano: I’d like first of all for lots of people to come to know about livetune+… that’s would be the start!
kz: We’re releasing an EP on May 11th (note: interview conducted in March), so that would be the first thing. I’m really happy to be able to be interviewed and play live before the release of the CD, but we can’t do the kind of live show we want to until it’s released. So that would be the first goal. As livetune+, knowing how much fun people are having when they come to see us is a preponderant influence in how we make things, so there’s a lot of things I want to do for the shows. Not only in Tokyo, but other places too.
――What’s something we should look out for in today’s performance?
kz: We’re always talking about what we should do for the MC sections. I often talk a lot, so I’m thinking I won’t talk today. So please look out for Yano talking today.
Yano: Hey! (laughs) You can’t say things like that. I’m thinking of all the different things I could talk about, but I always fumble my words. I generally even do it when I’m just having a conversation, so I’ve started practicing some tongue twisters. So in today’s MC I’d like to show the fruits of my efforts!
kz: Don’t stumble.
――Tell us a tongue twister.
Yano: Here I go. Roujakudanjo, Roujakudanjo, Roujakudanjo… (translator note: this phrase means “men and women of all ages”).
kz: That’s too hard to say even at normal speed! (laughs) You didn’t pick something like “akamakigami, kimakigami”!? (laughs) (translator note: this means “red rolled letter paper” and “yellow rolled letter paper”). You really surprised me. I didn’t think you were going to bring one like that out.
――So today we should look out for Yano’s MC’ing.
kz: Both of us always go at 120% during our performances and never let up. During our songs, people always join in and have fun, so I want to share that with everyone.
――Have you or will you be starting something new this Spring?
kz: Maybe bouldering? I haven’t tried that yet! I want to give that a go.
Yano: I’ve recently been interested in becoming an eating habits advisor. It seems like the qualification exam is coming in July. So I want to start studying for that this summer. But it’s embarrassing saying that since I haven’t started at all, so I’ll pick something else! (laughs) But, rice is something you eat every day, so I have an interest in that too. I think it would be the best thing ever if I can have fun while eating rice, so it would be good if I can get the qualifications to become an advisor.
――Please tell us about your upcoming release and concerts.
kz: Our EP will be released on May 11th. Our song “Soft Touch” is available on iTunes this month. Another one of our songs, “Milky Rally”, is also available on the unBORDE compilation CD. We’d really appreciate it if everyone can listen to our upcoming EP and those two songs.
――Have you finished the production of the EP?
Kz: It’s currently in the demo phase, but it’s very nearly finished. It just need a few really small touch ups. It should be done around the time that this article is posted.
――What kind of finishing touches are there left to do?
kz: The demo and recording are pretty much done, but there’s some things in the recording that I’m not completely satisfied with just yet. Also, there’s one song I want to record with everyone. A kind of “la-la-la” sing-a-long song. I want to get the staff and some acquaintances involved.
――Will you definitely go ahead with the song?
kz: We will. We’ll make a schedule if people can come together for it. If possible, I want to invite people to my house and record everyone singing there. It will be fun if we have that kind of feeling of friendship and feeling like a team. Other than that, we’re also shooting a music video. But in the meantime, let’s wait for the EP.
Yano: The EP really needs to come out, doesn’t it?
kz: We’re just going to be doing shows.
Yano: The songs on the EP can be enjoyed by anyone at the concerts, even if you don’t know who we are. Once the EP comes out, I want to do lots more live shows.
kz: Once it comes out, we’ll have to make more songs won’t we. (laughs)
――What are your inspirations for writing songs?
kz: Things like seeing my friends perform live. Because they really communicate with their fans. I get to see lots of things like that at my friends’ shows. I end up thinking that fans would really enjoy that, and that if I make songs like that people would really get into it. When I see that, I’d like to create songs like that for livetune+. Although that’s not the way create things. Our live performances are our main focus, and that’s where we get our inspiration for our music.
――What country would you like to perform in?
Yano: Hawaii.
kz: You just want to visit! (laughs)
Yano: I want to go to Brazil too.
――What countries have you played at up to now?
Yano: As livetune+, we’ve only performed in Singapore. Where should we go, I wonder…
kz: Somewhere in Europe?
Yano: I’d like to. Italy, Spain. I want to go.
kz: There are lots of places to play around Asia, like Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand. We should play around there soon. Europe might be difficult. Japanese music is really hard to get out there. But I would like to perform in Europe someday. There’s things like JAPAN EXPO in France.
――How do you come together to make songs?
Yano: I do a lot of my own individual stuff. We only really come together if we make a song.
kz: When it comes to what I do, we’re close because I’m usually at the back playing the music. Yano does a lot of stuff on her own. If we had instruments, I think it would be different.
――What are the both of you like together in your private lives?
kz: We’re not in contact too much recently.
Yano: We’re mutually busy.
kz: But we’ll probably go and do Hanami together.
Yano: It’s almost time Hanami season, isn’t it?
kz: People have a lot of fun being together during seasonal events. Like being on houseboats. I haven’t been meeting with Yano much recently, but we’re toddling along. Although we’ve become a unit together as livetune+, we conversely don’t meet up that much (laughs). But that doesn’t mean at all that we don’t get along.
――You both seem to get along really well!
Yano: We do! Kind of (laughs).
kz: I know what you mean.
Yano: …Well, I think he’s a good person! (laughs)
――Please leave a message for your overseas fans.
Yano: Before I became part of livetune+, I was able to play lots of live shows overseas and was able to meet all kinds of people from different countries. But where you come from doesn’t matter; warm people are warm and good people are good. I was able to see how many different kinds of people there really are. I also want to go and meet the people of those countries. I want to visit places I have visited once before again. Our songs are available online, so no matter where you are you can listen to us with one click of a button, and if you don’t understand Japanese, I think you can see what we are conveying in the music videos, so I really want people to check us out.
kz: I’ve also been to lots of different countries as a DJ, but I really want to perform live. I also want to communicate with the audience more. But DJs deal with the music and can’t do the MC’ing, so I haven’t been able to take the time to communicate with the audience much up to now. So I don’t chat much to people at the venues. I will do that this time for our show. Being able to communicate with everyone is what I’m looking forward to the most. We will probably tour Asia, so please look forward to it.

Aimyong
“I want people to call me Japan’s Bob Dylan. (laughs)”
――Is there anything you’re looking to do for today’s performance?
I want to be heard. There are lots of bands performing here today, but I’ll be singing to my own accompaniment. It’s not that I don’t want people to get excited, rather I want people to really listen. That’s the kind of thing I’m going for, and I’ll be really happy if it goes that way.
――Tell us about your clothes.
They’re plain clothes! I don’t really wear costumes or outfits. Mainly these kind of clothes. I don’t like my luggage to get full. I like to perform in what I arrive in and return in the same way.
――So you dress how you feel that day?
That’s right.
――What kind of image do your clothes give for today?
The stage today is quite big, so I want to be able to shine while performing (laughs). Go for simple, always.
――The first half of 2016 is almost over, but what are your aims and outlook for the future?
In terms of music, I left my old home to come to Tokyo, so my aim is for people from my old town to get to know me.
――Do you have any objectives in your private life?
To be able to cook meat by myself! I want to go for yakiniku by myself. I still have no acquaintances here in Tokyo. So I can’t really go out and eat by myself. So I’d like to be able to go for yakiniku on my own. And to be able to go to places like the hospital on my own. I’d like to be able to do anything.
――What is something you’d like to start doing this Spring?
I’d like to do something active, something that is like rock climbing. But, I probably won’t get around to doing it at all (laughs). I also want to take lots of photos. I love photos.
――Do you usually take photos?
I always have spare films with me.
――What kind of camera do you have?
Right now I’m using a RICOH camera, mostly. Also, a MINOLTA. It’s an old-style camera. Someone gave it to me.
――Please tell us about your upcoming release and concerts.
The final date for my tour will be on April 6th here in Tokyo, but I’d like people to check the information on my homepage when they can too! (There is info for concerts starting in June)
――Please leave a message for your overseas fans.
I am Japan’s Bob Dylan. Maybe Bob Marley sounds good too (laughs). I pray for world peace. Peace, peace!
