Character cafés are an exciting experience in Japan which sees a café collaborate with well-known anime series, game series and various franchises by decorating the café interior with designs and illustrations based on them and meals and drinks inspired by them.

Usamaru x BOX CAFE&SPACE (November 2 – January 27)
A very special Christmas course will be served from December 14 to 25 as part of the ongoing Usamaru themed cafes in Tokyo (Harajuku), Osaka (Umeda) and Aichi (Nagoya). Usamaru is a popular sticker character on the LINE messenger app. The tables at the cafe make use use of projection mapping in collaboration with Sony Japan’s latest technology. Once your meal is placed on the table characters will appear through the projection mapping and perform animations with your food. The Very Hungry Caterpillar x J.S. PANCAKE CAFÉ (October 3 – January 31)
J.S. PANCAKE CAFE is currently collaborating with the internationally beloved children’s picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle at 12 branches. The collaboration is running for four months. It began in October and will end in January next year. Each month they serve sweet pancakes that depict the tale of the caterpillar in the story as he grows. For December, there’s a whole range of autumn-themed delights to enjoy. Onegai My Melody x Dining Park Ikebukuro (November 13 – January 31)
The popular anime series Onegai My Melody produced by Studio Comet and based on Sanrio’s popular character My Melody is getting its own themed café that will hit Dining Park Ikebukuro on November 13, 2018 and run to January 31, 2019. Dining Park Ikebukuro is located on the 8th floor of Seibu Ikebukuro which is just outside Ikebukuro Station’s east exit. The café menu brings to life the fantastic world painted by the unique characters in the series, including an omurice dish inspired by My Melody’s rival Kuromi which is made with squid ink to create a pitch-black colour. There’s also a mild black-coloured curry based on Usamimi Kamen that is packed with plenty of minced meat as well as sliced cheese, wafer cakes and rice. Fans of Kirby absolutely have to visit the Kirby Café at Tokyo Solamachi. The food menu includes “Kirby’s Inhaled Capresse” which recreates Kirby’s ability to inhale anything, as well as “Waddle Dee’s Afternoon Nap Omurice” which features little Waddle Dee sleeping soundly under a blanket of omelette. With just a small bit of ingenuity, turn everyday food into something cute using Kaori’s easy recipe! With a few simple ideas, an ordinary recipe magically transforms into a cute dish.
In this character recipe you will learn how to make a “Pompompurin Steamed Cheese Bread” (labeled CHEESE STEAM UP BREAD).
Did you know that recently decorating a “steamed cheese bread” is the in thing to be doing right now? So, in this recipe I will explain about how to decorate a steamed cheese bread in a Christmas fashion.
1：Ingredients
1 steamed cheese bread
1 sheet of nori (dried seaweed)
Chocolate plastic
Red coloring powder
2：
Trace an illustration of your favorite character onto a baking sheet. I chose Pompompurin. Next, I thought it would be cute to indent the face and highlight the ears so I cut out these parts from the baking sheet.
3：
Next, place the face cutout onto the surface of the cheese bread and cut the bread in line with the cutout. Remove this part and set it aside. This part will be used to make the ears and hands. The surface below the removed part might be a bit uneven so using the back end of a chopstick make this area flat.
4：
Turn over the removed part and flatten this surface using the back end of a chopstick. Place the ear cutout onto the surface and cut the ears out. Using the remaining part cut out some round hands.
5：Color the plastic chocolate red and form the hat and boots. Using the white plastic chocolate, add the white parts. Using a puncher, cut out the eyes, nose and mouth from the laver seaweed.
Place all of these parts on the surface of the cheese bread, and voila, your “Pompompurin Steamed Cheese Bread” is complete.

Christmas has fallen on the Pompompurin Cafés in Harajuku and Umeda this month with a Pompompurin and Muffin Christmas themed menu being served. The menu includes a cream stew is topped with potato potage and fresh whipped cream that’s uneven to make it look like white snow, a yule log on top of which sits a mango ice cream Pompompurin and vanilla ice cream Muffin who are both wearing raspberry winter hats while enjoying Christmas together, and much more. Four Christmas food items have arrived to the Yokohama and Nagoya branches of the Pompompurin Café, two of which are collaborations between Pompompurin and Gudetama! One of these is the “Purin Santa & Gude Reindeer’s Xmas Beef Tongue Stew” which has been delivered to warm up both your heart and stomach this Christmas. This dish is a slowly cooked beef tongue stew cutely topped with our favourite Pompompurin who is wearing a Santa hat made from a walleye pollack roe mashed potato. Next to him his his trusty pal Gudetama the Reindeer who has lotus roots for antlers. Surrounding them are star shaped potatoes, carrots and assorted vegetables. A very special plate!

Recently, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu began starring in a series of promotional videos for the Gastropolis Kobe project. The artist traveled to the city to partake in plenty of delicious treats, and MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON went along for the ride! Here are some of the singer’s favorite spots around town.
Kobe, known as a city where East meets West, is lined with sweets shops that are unique to the area.
The tea salon TOOTH TOOTH Dekoboko Sabo opened in 2019 in the Kobe City Museum and offers a menu that mixes Western food and sweets with tea and ingredients from traditional Japanese cuisine. Kyary ordered the Dekoboko Sabo Afternoon Tea Set, a collection of western sweets blended with the essence of traditional Japanese flavors. Guests are invited to enjoy their tea and sweets in a one-of-a-kind space filled with Meiji period flare and retro Western furniture. Those interested will need to make a reservation, so be sure to remember the next time you’re in Kobe.

The next stop was Kobe Nankin-machi, one of the three major Chinatowns in Japan. Kobe MILK is known nationwide for its Apricot Pudding, which is made with local ingredients. The raw apricot pudding is mixed with milk brought from the foot of Mt. Rokko and other ingredients from Hyogo Prefecture. Of course, Kyary ordered some, and was amazed by its fluffy texture. You can only enjoy it in Kobe–also, the shop sells other puddings mixed with seasonal fruits, so don’t miss those either!

For Kyary’s final stop, the singer visited the Moore House, a cafe located in a building with over 100 years of history. Guests are surrounded by greenery, and the Western-style building is incredibly elegant. The Strawberry Mille-feuille Kyary ordered was created by an expert patissier and based on the strawberry mille-feuille recipe from the legendary French restaurant Maxim’s de Paris in Ginza. A generous amount of custard cream complements the crispy pie crust and enhances the sweetness of the fresh strawberries. We’d recommend it with a glass of champagne–if you’re of age.

To celebrate the return of Urusei Yatsura after 36 long years, a themed cafe will be coming to four cities in Japan for a limited time! The first cafe will open on December 1, 2022.
Urusei Yatsura is a manga series by Rumiko Takahashi that ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday from 1978 until 1987. An anime series aired in 1981 and became a massive hit with audiences, and understandably, it is still loved by anime and manga fans today.
The cafe features newly-drawn illustrations of six main characters including Ataru Moroboshi, Lum, and Ten.

The second Tabekko Doubutsu Cafe Stand event opened in Omotesando on November 1, 2022. Paying homage to the classic snack first released in 1978, the cafe features a number of tasty snacks inspired by the thin animal-shaped cookies popular around the world.
This second event will run through January 9, 2023. Reservations are required, and many dates were completely sold out prior to the event’s start date, particularly on weekends. We decided to visit, anxious to see what the fuss is all about.
We were first shocked to see the popular animals enjoying oden! Original goods featuring the characters enjoying the quintessential Japanese winter dish are only available at the cafe. From acrylic keychains to figures, visitors can snag some adorable merchandise to commemorate their trip to the exclusive event. Why not snag some items that would be useful on a daily basis, like a notebook or an apron?
For food, visitors can snag a special Oden Set and Chinese Dumplings, both perfect for the winter. The oden features popular ingredients like egg, daikon, fish cake, and mochikinchaku, each branded with the popular animal characters. Drinks include soy milk, green tea milk, and milk tea.
In addition to the exclusive Lion Cake which is limited to 25 servings a day, guests can find chocolate bananas and other sweets on the menu, including a Sweets Set limited to those reserving special seats at the venue. For every ¥1,000 spent on food and drink items, customers will receive one Tabekko Doubutsu trading card!
The exhibition space is a must-see for fans of this legendary snack, filled with rare works including an adorable and very colorful print of every animal holding a bowl of oden. Of course, a photo spot has been set up for visitors to take some prime shots for social media!
Don’t miss the animal meet and greet, which is making its triumphant return from the last event! Visitors can interact with different animals on different days, so check the official Twitter page (@tabekko_cafe) for the schedule and more information! Guests will be able to snag the Halloween Mont Blanc and Halloween Poison Apple cakes, available for ¥580 each including tax. The Mont Blanc is filled with pumpkin custard and Chantilly cream. The Poison Apple is a sweet and sour cake featuring a blend of chocolate mousse covered in red glaze and applesauce with apple pulp.

Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo will hold a special Christmas-themed Sylvanian Families buffet starting November 1, 2022. This is the second Sylvanian Families event following the previous Halloween-themed buffet, which became extremely popular. Some guests even bring their own Sylvanian Families dolls!
Starting in November, visitors can enjoy a full lineup of 20 scrumptious dishes inspired by the cake shop found in Sylvania Village. Some sweets are also inspired by the many beloved characters found in the series, and anyone wanting to get into the Christmas spirit won’t want to miss this exclusive event. For those without a sweet tooth, some light lunches will also be available.
The restaurant will also erect a decorative display of Sylvanian Families enjoying a Christmas party and a sweet diorama made exclusively of desserts by the pasty chef. Guests can enjoy tea time while getting lost in this magical world, so get excited about the Christmas season!
