【MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON GUIDE】How to Spend Your Summer in Japan (With a Pop Culture Twist)

05.August.2016 | FEATURES / SPOT

The sweltering heatwave is taking over us all here in Japan, but don’t let that stop you from having some summer fun. Because let’s admit it, summer is quite the best to be out and about making memories that’ll keep you warm and fuzzy when you’re old and wrinkled. MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON brings you a list of essential summer activities (*only the best) along with ones that have a pop culture twist, because that’s what we’re really all about.

1. Fireworks

Ok, but first with the essentials. Firework festivals are usually quite (read: extremely) overpopulated and a handy tip is to head around noon to score a good viewing point and drink in the hours to follow. With all the hassle that it does truthfully involve, this fireworks festival that started back in 1933 will be worth it all. Held right by the Tama River, they’ll be shooting up fireworks non-stop for a full hour. That’ll be 8,500 individual fireworks. Thought an hour long fireworks show would bore you? Not this one.

Dates: Aug. 21, 2016
Start/End Time: 6:50pm – 7:50pm
Venue: Chofu Fireworks Festival Location
Details: http://hanabi.csa.gr.jp/
Entry: Free
Closest station: Chofu, Keio Tamagawa (3 min. walk)

2. Beach

It’s summer, and you admittedly need a healthy tan to gloss up the skin that has whitened over the long winter days. If you’ve been Japanese and avoided sun rays in all ways possible (ref: below picture), let this be the year you stop worrying and start enjoying. (Do spray that SPF on your body, though.)

This beautiful beach called Nabetahama beach is a 2 hour 45 minute ride from Tokyo via use of the Superview Odoriko Line. This specific beach has even been granted the “AA” rank for its quality of water by Japan’s Ministry of Environment, which is the highest score you can get. Considering most of the beaches we are familiar with and are close to Tokyo (Zushi, Yuigahama, etc.) are rank B, perhaps adding on another hour for travel may be the better option.

3. Chill at home, Pokemon style

Ok, it’s hot. So despite everything that’s going on outside, a day or two spent indoors in an AC-chilled room is totally understandable. To elevate that indoors experience, lounge with this sleepy, hungry Pokemon while catching a Pokemon on Pokemon GO (If you’re a lucky one who’s got a number of Pokestop just available from your room). For those of you who were lucky enough to jump in on the reservation period between February and March of this year will be able to claim your jumbo Snorlax cushion bed, set to be delivered in August from Premium Bandai. In case you weren’t able to jump in on that bandwagon, a similar Snorlax mega-bean bag will be made available in the US for 1/5 the price of the Premium Bandai one by the end of this year.

4. Be the Totoro at the Beach

With the recent reopening of the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, the Ghibli Exhibit being held in Roppongi Hills, and Ghibli’s latest film “Red Turtle” coming out in a month, it seems like Ghibli’s been seeping into our lives now more than ever. With this item though, Rather than seeing Ghibli on display, you can actually be one of their beloved characters in the most appropriate summer wear. The “Totoro “the Pam” Onesie” can be purchased from LA-based unique apparel store, POPRAGEOUS.
