#1. To give the kids a true scare: Miyakojima Pantu Festival

If you were a kid growing up in Miyakojima, you would be scared for your life every time the Miyakojima Pantu Festival came around. Known as a festival that wards bad spirits away, the three “Pantu”s (transl: “People who Eat” in Miyakojima dialect) cover themselves up with mud and they will chase you, whether you like it or not. The mud is taken specifically from bottom of the Nmariga well, a spiritual purification spot where babies once took their first baths. Consequently, having Pantus chase you and rub some of this mud on you is something you want if you’re out at this festival, since it’ll fight demons and keep bad diseases away for at least the following year. We can’t deny that this is tremendously horrifying for the little ones, though. (Reference: below video)

Location: Shimajiri (Northern Miyako Island)

When: November on the Chinese Calendar

#2. To be frightened and astonished at the same time: Toyohashi Gion Festival

Normally when we see fireworks go airborne, the men behind the scenes light up the fuse of the cannon. They don’t hold the cannon when it’s lit, why? Because that can literally take your life. Well apparently not so with this festival where all cannons are handheld and shot up in the sky, with the fireworks subsequently falling down on them. Originally known as a rite of passage for men to show their bravery, it has since evolved to a festival that brings good health and prosperity. Make it rain fellas!

Toyohashi Gion Festival

Location: Yoshida Shrine in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture

When: 3rd Friday of July

#3. For traditional Japanese Bon Dance, but silent: Muon (translation: silent) Bon-Odori Festival

When a festival is given complaints for loud noise but no one wants to call quits on the Bon Dance, here’s a solution: silent bon dance. FM transmitters transmit the music to the earphones that are distributed to the participants, and as you can see from the video, there is no music whatsoever but the dancing ensues. Way to keep the party going.

#4. To trash talk: Akutai (Trash talk) Festival

With all the crazy overwork, you’ve got to give the Japanese a break and let them trash talk all they want…at a shrine. Participants at this particular festival are encouraged to trash talk at the 13 tengu that come by the Iizuna Shrine. On top of that, they’re supposed to steal the offerings in the Tengu’s hands if they want to lead a happy life in the following year. Get ready to rub off the shy attitude and let your mouth run wild at this trash talk festival.

Akutai Festival

Location: Atago Shrine in Kasama, Ibaraki prefecture

When: Dec. 31 (same date every year)

#5. Last but not least, everybody’s favorite: The Penis Festival

Would you like your business to succeed? Have your expecting baby to be delivered safely? Your relationships to succeed? All you need to do is head over to the Kanamara Festival aka the Penis Festival that happens every April at Kawasaki’s Kanayama Shrine, which exactly aids in accomplishing the listed purposes. The festival is complete with penis-shaped food, penis-shaped items, and the carrying of the pink Penis-shaped mikoshi that goes by the name “Elizabeth” (in ode to Tokyo’s drag queen club that runs under the same name, also the one who donated the penis).
