Tokyo’s National Museum of Nature and Science Opens VR Exhibition For its Taxidermy Animals

05.May.2020 | SPOT

With the temporary closure of Tokyo’s National Museum of Nature and Science as a result of COVID-19, and everyone having to stay home, the museum has decided to open a “VR Museum” which gives people a peek into the museum’s rare collection inside the storage room which is closed off to the publicーfrom the comfort of their own homes.

The museum’s third floor is home to the history of life on the Japanese island where many taxidermy mammals are on display. This includes part of the “Yoshimoto Collection” of 400 or so specimens collected by Hawaiian businessman Watson “Yoshimoto” Toshinori (1909-2004). These specimens are normally kept inside the National Museum of Nature and Science’s private storage room.

Enter the world of the “THE WILDLIFE MUSEUM” in VR

Last week, the National Museum of Nature and Science opened “THE WILDLIFE MUSEUM,” a VR museum experience where you can see the many different private specimens that Yoshimoto showcased in his own private exhibition which he funded in 1992.

There are 24 different taxidermied animals recreated virtually to see.

Since museums are closed right now, this is a great way to enjoy an exhibition up close and personal from your own home.

There’s even a Night Mode where you can turn all the lights off for an even more immersive experience. Learn the autobiographical story behind Yoshimoto.

All of the virtual animals on display at the VR museum are mostly made up of rare specimens that have never been shown at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno. And the museum plans to add even more to the virtual world.
