“This is me.”

That was the message posted by Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee on her social media on Monday upon unveiling her new look and detailing her fight with leukaemia. The response from fans in Japan was messages of love and support on her official Instagram and Twitter pages.

It’s been short of two months since Ikee returned to the pool after over a year of not stepping in. The swimmer has formed a new partnership with global skincare brand SK-II and release a video diary talking about her experiences.

“The strength I received from my family and friends, and the warm words of support given to me by everyone during my fight with leukaemia, has helped me overcome this diseases,” she explained. “The entire world is going through tough, uncertain times right now. I hope this message can serve as some form of inspiration not only to my fellow athletes, but anyone who is going against difficulties.”

This was the first time Ikee had shown her hair short since being diagnosed with the disease last February. Her wish was to show herself as she wasーa confident, positive, and new womanーand what she has discovered in herself over the past year. “SK-II has respected my desire to be honest and open about myself. Letting me be myself in the time I have prepared myself for this. I am grateful for the support and messages people have sent me on my road to recovery.”
