FRUITS ZIPPER, a new idol group from ASOBISYSTEM, has a simple concept: “From Harajuku to the World.” Ready to transmit what they call ‘NEW KAWAII’ from Harajuku, an area known for fashion and individuality, to their soon-to-be global fanbase, the group consists of seven members: Amane Tsukiashi, Suzuka Chinzei, Yui Sakurai, Luna Nakagawa, Mana Manaka, Karen Matsumoto, and Noel Hayase.
Three members of FRUITS ZIPPER sat down with us for an interview.
“Could you introduce yourself?”
–Noel Hayase
“Hi, everyone! I’m the youngest member of FRUITS ZIPPER, Noel Hayase, and I’m 18 years old. I’m half-German and half-Japanese, but I attended an international school, so I’m pretty good at languages. I speak Japanese, English, German, and a little French! I like to play games, watch videos, and just hang out with friends, but I also love dancing and moving my body. I also like to work with technology, and edit my own videos and songs.”

My name is Suzuka Chinzei, but you can call me Osuzu!
I spend about ⅓ of my waking hours thinking about food, especially gyoza 🥟and fried tofu. I’d prefer my gyoza with a thin skin and filled with veggies. I’m a big fan of pairing alcohol with my food too!
I grew up in Nishinomiya in Hyogo Prefecture. Fans of the anime series The Melancholy of
Haruhi Suzumiya will be familiar with the town–I used to do the dance from that show all the
time. I’ve loved dancing since I was a kid. My mom told me that once when I was young, I
started dancing to the song Kawaii Kakurenbo, but I was crying because I didn’t WANT to dance–I just couldn’t help it. I guess I just want to dance on a cellular level.
I started appearing on NHK Educational TV’s Tensai Terebi-kun MAX when I was in 5th grade.
Since then, I’ve started appearing on different variety shows, and I’m currently working on
Nyanchuu! Uchuu! Housou Chu-! and German for Travel.

“Nice to meet you! Here’s a question from readers: why did you decide to become an idol?”
–Noel Hayase
“Since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to be center stage. When I saw an artist performing live, I started to think “wow, I’d love to see what they’re seeing,” so I decided to pursue a career in the music industry. Thanks to some of the connections I’ve made over the years, I’m now able to pursue the idol life! I’m glad that I chose this path because I love being on stage with the other members of FRUITS ZIPPER.”

“I decided I wanted to be an idol a long time ago when I ended my time on Tensai Terebi-kun MAX. Right after, I was photographed in a school uniform for Shueisha’s Aoharu Magazine. The problem was that I was already in my mid-teens at that point. I thought it was too late to become an idol, so I just put those feelings away.
After that, I had so many different opportunities to appear in different plays and variety shows, but there was always this nagging feeling in my chest. It’s hard to describe, but I just felt like something was missing.
During that period of stress and confusion, there was a lot of discussion about my joining ASOBISYSTEM. When I looked at their website, I saw that they were recruiting members for a new idol group. I started freaking out, and my mom–who was standing next to me at the time–
said that I should talk with them about it. I went to the person in charge and asked them about what it would take to be an idol. I realized, in that moment, that I didn’t want to go the rest of my life without trying it out. Now I can say that I made the right decision, I guess. (laugh)

“Harris, the content director of KAWAII MONSTER CAFE and the current manager of FRUITS ZIPPER, contacted me out of the blue and asked if I was interested in idols. When he brought up the subject, I followed my gut. I instantly knew it would be fun, so I decided to just take a leap of faith!”
“Moving on, tell us about what you’ve worked on the hardest up until this point in your life.”
–Noel Hayase
“When I was a student, I tried to balance my studies with my performing arts activities. I had done a little modeling work before I started working as an idol, but once I joined FRUITS ZIPPER I got incredibly busy. My final exams coincided with my prep period and my idol debut! Once I
overcame all of that and successfully graduated, I felt so much stronger. (laugh)

“In my teens, I wanted to find a balance between being ‘normal’ and being ‘special.’
From a young age, I had been working in a space where I was surrounded by adults. I think that made me feel special, compared to my peers.
But living in that world was difficult as well. There were so many things that I felt I was missing out on–things that I felt I couldn’t catch up to.
One day, I was riding the bullet train alone. I lived in Hyogo Prefecture, but I commuted to Tokyo at least three days a week. When I passed by Nagoya, I suddenly got really sick with a fever, and my parents rushed me to the hospital.
I remember wondering how adults dealt with things like that. There were so many days that I would call my mom from Yamagata as a fifth-grader, crying my eyes out.
The world of entertainment is so vastly different from the real world, and I desperately wanted a sense of normalcy. I needed that comfort. I’m not sure what the definition of ‘normal’ is, but I
guess I didn’t want anyone to take away that innocent childishness from me. Looking back, I worked so incredibly hard to protect it.”

“During my time as a poster girl for KAWAII MONSTER CAFE HARAJUKU, I worked hard to create a space that people could enjoy. I wanted everyone to leave satisfied and smiling and I wanted them to come back again. Looking back on those days, every day was so happy and the space was just so welcoming. I don’t think that the KAWAII MONSTER CAFE could have been successful without the team members who worked so hard to create the best possible experience. Every moment was heaven.”
“Thanks for sharing. FRUITS ZIPPER’s concept is “From Harajuku to the World.” If you end up
going abroad, what would you like to do?”
–Noel Hayase
“I’d love to do a special concert in each of the countries I’ve been to. Each concert would be created for each country–we’d wear unique costumes and have unique sets. At the same time, I feel like we can bring Japanese idol culture to the world by staying true to ourselves. I can dream. I want to do something really spectacular!”
–Suzuka Chinzei
“Right now, I’m working on an educational program called German for Travel. I’ve learned so many phrases, so I’d like to try them out in real life–things like ordering a meal and explaining my thoughts about the food to the waiter. I do a cute dance on the show too, so I’d like to do that with the waiter too! I’m still a little too nervous to try it alone, so I’d ask our half-German member Noel Hayase–who speaks 3.5 languages!–to be next to me the whole time.
I’d also like to lay down in the middle of the Sedona desert and see a UFO!”

“I want us to appear in a major festival!
After that, I’d love to represent Japan on the world stage at something like Japan Parade or Japan Expo. I want to spread Japanese idol culture to the world through ‘KAWAII,’ something that’s so universally loved!
Personally, I love musicals and theme parks, so I’m hoping to travel a lot in the future.”
“Last question. What is the most important thing about being an idol to you?”
–Noel Hayase
“Being an idol means always having a goal. It’s more fun and more useful to keep thinking about where I want to go and how I want to be. If I were to take part in idol activities without a goal, I’d lose sight of why I’m doing what I’m doing. I started down this path because I had a goal in mind, and I intend to keep doing so.”
–Suzuka Chinzei
“I think the most important thing is to make everyone happy and to increase the Earth’s
vibrations! Human beings can’t be happy-go-lucky every day–we all have our own problems and negative feelings. But I hope that our music, our videos, and our live performances can support everyone during those difficult times.
I also think that ‘fun’ is something that spreads from person to person. When I’m performing
live, I’m truly enjoying myself from the bottom of my heart. The other members can sense
those honest feelings, and they carry them home to their families, to their friends at school, and maybe to their grandparents who they haven’t seen in a while. That sense of ‘fun’ is contagious–it lets us connect with people. I want everyone to have fun more than anything. Maybe we can make the entire world happy, in time. (laugh)

Idol group CUTIE STREET, which debuted this August, held its first solo concert CUTIE STREET Solo Live – 01 STREET – at Tokyo Hulic Hall on October 7, 2024. CUTIE STREET is composed of eight members: Risa Furusawa, Aika Sano, Kana Itakura, Ayano Masuda, Emiru Kawamoto, Miyu Umeda, Nagisa Manabe, and Haruka Sakuraba. The girls made their debut as part of ASOBISYSTEM’s KAWAII LAB. idol project in Summer 2024, with the group’s concept being “KAWAII MAKER.” The eight members are all different ages and come from different backgrounds, and they aim to transmit KAWAII from Harajuku to the world. This solo performance was held about two months after the girls made their stage debut. Tickets were sold out and many fans came to the venue way before the show, eager to see the girls perform on their big day.
As the Overture played, the members appeared on stage one after another, with the audience erupting with shouts of joy. Their first song performed solo was Devoted Cinderella! Despite clearly being nervous, the girls continued to smile, performing earnestly like princesses in a fairy tale. After the song, the eight members greeted the fans gathered at the venue. Adorably, each girl introduced herself and announced what they had eaten for breakfast that day. “I’m so happy to see so many people here,” Manabe said. “I hope that even more people will come to love CUTIE STREET!” The second song performed was Can’t We Just Be Cute? ~Kawaii Dakejya Damedesuka? The track is getting rave reviews and recently ranked first in the ‘TikTok Popular Songs Ranking 50.’ The song is scheduled to be released via CD on November 13 and features a catchy pop melody and fun dialogue and phrases from the members. The performance was open to video recording, and the eight too-cute performers can be seen on TikTok and other social networking sites. Following this, the group covered the song Nantene! by SWEET STEADY, another idol group belonging to the same label. They performed to the best of their ability, utilizing a different kind of charm than their seniors. The girls also showed off their diverse talents filled with unlimited potential, with Unlock My Heart, a cool song with a rock-style melody, and daylight, an emotional song with a fast pace. CUTIE STREET also performed the new song Happy World! for the first time, showing off choreography filled with fist-pumping and energy. The audience couldn’t help but smile, and the entire venue was filled to the brim with happiness. The final part of the concert began with Hello Hello Mirai as Furusawa called out to the audience. “Are you ready to wave your penlights?” Penlights displaying the girl’s member colors twinkled like a starry sky throughout the venue. The light shone as if it was congratulating the girls on their future lives as idols. Lastly, the group performed their popular song Can’t We Just Be Cute? ~Kawaii Dakejya Damedesuka? one more time, with the girls charming the audience with their extreme cuteness. CUTIE STREET announced a solo performance to commemorate the CD release of their first single, Can’t We Just Be Cute? ~Kawaii Dakejya Damedesuka?, would be held at Hulic Hall Tokyo on November 13, with a second solo performance scheduled for December 5. The surprises did not end there, as the group also told fans that on October 16, they would release the music video for the song, getting the audience more excited. Last October, FRUITS ZIPPER member Yui Sakurai began a one-year project titled ‘Yui Sakurai 10th Anniversary -IDOL OF IDOLS-’ to celebrate the 10th year since her idol debut. On October 2, the idol held ‘Yui Sakurai 10th ANNIVERSARY LIVE 2024’ at Zepp Divercity (Tokyo). Sakurai debuted in the entertainment industry in 2013 and currently boasts the mint green member color in the idol group FRUITS ZIPPER. With their adorable looks and unique personalities, the members have become popular with both men and women alike, and are currently seen as representatives of idol culture going into 2025. ‘Yui Sakurai 10th Anniversary -IDOL OF IDOLS-’ included a solo tour held in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, along with the release of her first photo book. The recent solo concert represented the culmination of the project, and understandably, many fans came to the venue to congratulate the idol. As the lights dimmed and green penlights filled the venue, Sakurai appeared in a dress resembling a bouquet of flowers, accompanied by the lively sounds of the band. The idol first performed her solo song Spotlight from FRUITS ZIPPER’s latest single NEW KAWAII / Fruits Basket. The track expresses the singer’s desire to grow up after 10 years as an idol, and dares to feature a tune that Sakurai doesn’t excel at. The audience agreed that Sakurai performed Spotlight with a perfect score of 100 points, proving her growth before her fans. Continuing on, the idol won the hearts of the fans yet again with Zurui Kawayui, a pop tune with a distinctive sound. The live performance immediately invited fans into the ever-changing world of Yui Sakurai without holding back. After thanking the fans who had gathered at the venue, Sakurai continued with a cover of Seiko Matsuda’s classic Akai Sweet Pea. Her performance mesmerized fans, her voice soft, but she quickly raised the venue’s voltage with a cover of Hatsukoi Cider by Buono! After changing into an angelic costume complete with wings, she went on to perform Tokaikko Junjou (°C-ute) and More Kiss (Fairies). Her confidence amazed the crowd. In addition to these covers, Sakurai also performed You, You, You, a new song prepared for the concert. The dance number embodied a more mature Yui Sakurai, blending cuteness and sexiness and showing an entirely new side to the performer. As the atmosphere seemed to switch, Sakurai also performed covers of Tenshi wa doko e (≠ME) and Idol (YOASOBI.) The stage was a stunning sight, and loud cheers rang out from the entire audience.The second half of the concert began with Caste Summer Session as silver tape fell from the ceiling. Even though fall had already begun, the venue was filled with summer-like enthusiasm. With the electricity in the venue at its highest level of the night, Sakurai sand FRUITS ZIPPER’s signature song Watashi no Ichiban Kawaiitokoro solo. The biggest KAWAII of the day had certainly appeared at Zepp Divercity (Tokyo), and for the last song of the show, the idol performed BABY I LOVED. Her crystal clear voice captivated every fan in the audience. As soon as the idol left the stage, the fans immediately asked for an encore. These loud voices summoned the artist back, and she performed her new song You, You, You for a second time. An MC portion followed, in which Sakurai read a letter reflecting on the past decade, including the excitement she felt starting out as an idol, the heartbreak of leaving the stage at one point, and how it felt meeting the other members of FRUITS ZIPPER. “I’m only here because of those who support me and protect me. Even in my private life, I’m supported by so many people,” she said. “I continue to love and cherish each and every one of you!” Continuing, Sakurai concluded her letter hoping for future growth. “For my next anniversary, I’d like to truly embody what it is to be an eternal idol for everyone, inspired by the phrase “idol of idol” given to me by (producer) Misa Kimura.” The final encore was a second performance of Watashi no Ichiban Kawaiitokoro, and fans were allowed to record video. Yui Sakurai’s growth and cuteness are sure to spread around the world thanks to this footage taken by the audience. Sakurai’s 10 years as an idol have not been smooth. Nevertheless, she continued to work as hard as she could and has grown into an idol who can now fill Zepp Divercity (Tokyo), not only as a group but also as a solo artist. “If you don’t give up, your dreams will come true.” This Cinderella story was something the artist realized together with her fans. The story of Yui Sakurai will continue, into her 11th year, 15th year, 20th year, and beyond. “Someday, I’d like to hold a solo concert at the Nippon Budokan,” Sakurai said when the concert concluded. FRUITS ZIPPER Begins First Nationwide Hall Tour, Announces 3rd Anniversary Concert at Saitama Super Arena
FRUITS ZIPPER kicked off its nationwide tour, FRUITS ZIPPER JAPAN TOUR 2024 – AUTUMN – THE STORY OF SEVEN COLORS, on September 28 at Toda City Culture Hall in Saitama. The tour will feature 15 shows in 12 cities around Japan and is the largest hall tour in the group’s history. Tickets for all performances, except additional dates, are sold out. The members transformed into ‘NEW KAWAII Princesses’ for their 1st album released in April, with the 2nd single album’s artwork based on the theme of “the beginning of a fairy tale.” The tour’s theme is “Story,” and audiences will be treated to the tale of how these girls became princesses in the first place. Wearing dresses corresponding to their member colors, the group performed popular tracks like Watashino Ichiban Kawaiitokoro and NEW KAWAII, as well as the new songs Fruits Basket and Starlight Valkyrie from their 2nd single CD released on September 18. FRUITS BASKET performed a total of 20 songs, including solo and unit songs, sharing each member’s individuality along with the meaning of the title “THE STORY OF SEVEN COLORS.” For the encore, the group performed Fruits Basket for a second time, and during their performance, the members ran through the aisles of the venue, interacting with the fans.
