This year’s recommended “beautiful autumn-color spots”chosen by the editing office of “Jaran.”

19.October.2017 | SPOT

A touring guide magazine “Jaran” announced the ranking of beautiful autumn-color spots for this year chosen by the editing office.

Here, I will introduce to you the six recommended spots.

1st place: Oirase Keiryu (Aomori Prefecture)

【best time to view: Late October】

“Oirase Keiryu” is one of the best autumn-color beauty spots in Japan where beautiful mountain streams and 14 waterfalls can be enjoyed. The scenery of this spot in autumn is very colorful. You can see many trees here such as Japanese beech and mountain maple. It is recommended that you rent a bicycle and tour around the area.

2nd place: Sagano Railroad Hand Car (Kyoto)

【Best time to view: Mid November to early December】

You can enjoy the autumn colors from a hand car which runs between Sagano and Hozugawa Valley (it takes about 25 minutes to get to the valley). A colorful tunnel of autumn leaves such as maple, gingko and lacquer tree can be enjoyed while riding on an “open”hand car.

3rd place: Tofuku Temple (Kyoto)

【Best time to view: Mid November to late November】

This temple is one of the largest in Kyoto. It was built in the Kamakura Era.

There are more than 2,000 maple trees growing inside the huge temple grounds. It feels like you are floating on a cloud of maple leaves if you stand on the bridge spanning Sengyokukan, a valley.

4th place: Syuzenji Hot Spring Chikurin no Komichi (Shizuoka Prefecture)

【Best time to view:Mid November to early December】

There are green bamboo groves on both sides of the path and vivid red colored leaves can be enjoyed at this spot. The red bridge is a suitable spot to take a photo. Also, the garden will be opened from the 18th of November (Sat.) to the 30th (Thurs.). It is located inside the ancient “Syuzenji”temple in a hot springs town. (fee must be paid to enter the garden).

5th place: Korankei (Aichi Prefecture)

【Best time to view the spot: Mid November to late November】

One of the best autumn-color viewing spot in the Tokai area.

The maple leaves of Iiyama Mountain will be lighted up for a limited time (during November). The golden colored leaves cannot be seen during the daytime so it is a must see at night. Taigetsukyo (bridge) and the 4,000 maple trees reflected on the water of the Tomoe River which can be seen from Tomoe Bridge is truly a beautiful sight to see.

5th place: Shinhotaka Ropeway (Gifu Prefecture)

【Best time to view: Early October to late October】

The beautiful scenery of red leaves can be enjoyed from the ropeway. The area around Shirakaba Station is very beautiful in mid October but it is recommended that you visit the area around Shintakaho Onsen Station in late October where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Northern Alpes. It is recommended that you visit the area in morning or early evening since the air is very clear.

Why don’t you go out and view the beautiful autumn sceneries of Japan?

▼Comments from Shunei Kusaka, the chief priest of the temple

“We (human being) have five senses. They are eyesight, auditory sense, olfactory sense, taste sense and haptic sense and we have eyes, ears, a nose, a tongue and our bodies to use with those five senses. However, Buddhism teaches us that we have another sense called “I” to feel the thoughts of Buddhism. In Buddhism^, the six senses are called as “Rokkon.” The temple is aiming to hold events which will resonate with peoples’ senses and thus we will hold Koyo Week. We are preparing art fairs and various events. We hope that you will enjoy a quiet time watching beautiful autumn leaves. Peace to you.”

The inside of the park is created in a precise manner. It has many special things such as a stream flowing into a pond and a stone bridge where you can enjoy the vivid contrast of such things and the autumn leaves. The park includes a Japanese garden and Tokyo Toritsu Central Library and therefore it can be said that the park has a comfortable atmosphere although it is located inside Tokyo. Yellow-colored trees, can be seen along with the statue of Arisugawakyu, the symbol of the park. This is a must-see.
