You will love the fluffy texture! Five recommended “pancake & hotcake” restaurants in Tokyo.

30.October.2017 | FOOD / SPOT

Steaming pancakes, melted butter and lots of maple syrup… In this article, I will introduce to you some restaurants where you can eat delicious pancakes/hotcakes which both children and adults love.

Omotesando “Café Casa”

Omotesando “Café Casa” is an old, classic café run by father and child. The display and the illustrations on their menu have a warm atmosphere and the stained-glass window was made by the owner of the shop. The restaurant is surrounded by greenery and the décor inside is very colorful.

Approximately 20 years ago after hearing requests from customers, hotcakes joined menu (¥750 with tax). The contrast between the crispy surface of the pancake and the fluffiness that lies within is heavenly. The hotcakes are covered in maple syrup for a truly exquisite blend of flavors.

Harajuku “gram”

“gram” is a stylish café that you can find by walking from Harajuku Station down Takeshita Street for about 5-minutes. The green sign is the landmark. The pancakes they make are made with the best ingredients and made one-by-one after an order. The most popular soft pancake on the menu “Premium Pancake” (950 yen) is highly recommended. The pancake is very soft. The waiter was wobbling as they brought it over to the table, and pancake itself too was wobbling. It looked as if it was going to collapse by just being placed on the tabletop. I am pretty sure that you have never eaten such a fluffy pancake.

Ikebukuro “Shiawase no Pancake”

The restaurant has an open kitchen where you can see the chefs making each pancake in a precise manner. The ingredients of the pancakes are all natural and no baking powder is used. Whereas in the normal making of pancakes the frying process is only a few minutes at Shiawase no Pancake a special steaming process is used which takes over 20 minutes. The whipped-butter used as the topping of the pancakes uses Manuka honey directly imported from New Zealand and cultured butter made from Hokkaido produced fresh cream.

Kinshicho “Kissa Knit”

This cafe has been running since 1966 and the sound of a bell will make you feel as if you had been transported through time to the Showa Period. The café is loved by many customers.

The special “Hot cakes (750yen and includes a soft drink)” with a toothpick sticking through the butter on top is their trademark. Two pancakes that are cooked a in copper plate are about five centimeters’ thick. When you cut it with a knife, I am sure that you will be surprised by the crispy surface. The thick and heavy pancake is fluffy when you bring it into your mouth. I am sure that you will be fascinated with this gap in textures.

Asakusa “Tengoku”

Inside “Tengoku,” you can smell something sweet. They start mixing the ingredients after getting an order, and cook the pancakes on copper sheets. It tastes crunchy on the outside, and fluffy inside. When you put butter and maple syrup, the flavor of the milk gets stronger. The owner, Rumi Ueno is particular about this orthodox pancake. The taste of this pancake will really make you relieved and it might remind you of your mom who made pancakes for a snack when you were little.
