【Tokyo Stroll】Asakusa Sightseeing: Eating and Walking Down Nakamise Shopping Street & Rickshaw Riding at Kaminarimon
Today's Tokyo stroll destination is Asakusa. Asakusa is a popular tourist spot for people coming to Japan and is always packed.
However, today's weather forecast predicted rain! So Yuna and Ellie's first stop on their Tokyo stroll was to buy umbrellas from Shinagawa.
Buying an umbrella at AEON in Shinagawa Seaside
Shinagawa Station is linked to the shinkansen and numerous airports, so you will find many people from inside and outside Japan waiting there. A convenient place to visit when in Shinagawa if you want something is the Shingawa Seaside branch of AEON.
The shopping complex can be reached in 10 minutes by bus or taxi. If you use Shinagawa Seaside Station it's just a 5 minute walk.
When looking for somewhere that sells umbrellas to make being in the rain a bit more fun, Yuna and Ellie discovered "fururi," a place that sells vinyl umbrellas with colourful designs that you can change - simply screw off the top of the umbrella frame, remove the vinyl sheet and replace it with whichever one you like.
There are 48 designs to enjoy with a 60cm umbrella.
Yuna chose a cute design that has blue and yellow water drops. Ellie went for a pink design. A colourful umbrella means turning that rain induced frown upside down. Asakusa is the place to go if you want something fight off the rain!

Eat and walk down Nakamise Shopping Street♪
As you come to the Kaminarimon Gate you must first press your hands together and bow before heading through to Nakamise Shopping Street. The street is lined with lots of shops selling all kinds of goodies from toys to food to souvenirs.
The first item Yuna and Ellie came across were little randoresu keyrings. This is most definitely the kind of souvenir you can only get in Japan. Ever since popular Hollywood actresses put out photos of themselves donning these backpacks, they have become popular overseas for their colourfulness and durability. There are even people who wear them as a fashion item.
The next treasure they found were the 'daigaku imo'! Daigaku imo are candied sweet potatoes. The outside is crunchy and the outside is soft. They are deliciously sweet. You absolutely must try them if you come across them in Japan.

Approaching Sensō-ji
When you come out of Nakamise Shopping Street you will find yourself at Sensō-ji, Asakusa's ancient Buddhist temple.
The first step to take when going to shrines and temples in Japan is washing your hands, which is called "temizuya." Hold the ladle with your right hand and wash your left hand and vice versa. Take the ladle with your right hand and scoop some water. Pour the water into your left hand and rinse your mouth with it. Make sure to never bring the ladle to your mouth. Spit the water next to the fountain, never directly back into it. (Bonus: Check out our step-by-step guide to praying etiquette and shrines and temples in Japan.)
Subsequently, approach the main temple building. After praying, toss in a monetary offering. Then put your hands together and bow once. Since there is no shrine here you do not need to clap. Finally, perform a light bow to complete the prayer.
I wonder what those two were praying for. They look unusually serious.
There are lots of great places to take photos around Sensō-ji so be sure to have a good look around.

Tour Asakusa on a rickshaw
After their temple walk, Yuna and Ellie boarded a rickshaw to scope the Asakusa townscape. The rickshaws have a tarpaulin rain cover and lap blanket in case of rain so you can still have fun even when the weather is bad.
We recommend taking a photo at Dempoin Street when riding your rickshaw as pictured above! It's a special kind of place that you can only find in Asakusa so be sure to take a memorable picture.

"I wanna eat curry for breakfast, lunch and dinner all year round!" If you're a curry lover, and a curry lover to that extent, then do I have the perfect article for you. With just my purse, camera and undying love for curry in hand, I, Rinko Murata, am on a mission to find the best curry houses in the city that are approved by both myself and others.
This time, I visited "Curry Land" in Asakusa, a place that specialises in local curry-in-a-pouch! I was guided to the dazzling world of curry by its fascinating owner, where every possible retort-pouch curry, from all times and all places, were collected together!
Asakusa's Kaminarimon—a majestically built gate. I glanced a certain shop out the corner of my eye when I was looking at a group of cute girls in kimono taking a photo in front of the gorgeous gate. I thought when coming here I had entered a quiet residential area, but I suddenly felt something strange in the air around me.
Oooooh! What could this be!
There it was, the striking signboard of Curry Land. Below it, at the entrance, was the shop window—that was completely covered in pouch-curries!And at the storefront was something I had never seen before... they even had a curry vending machine!
That's right! This time, coming to Asakusa, I have found a place truly spectacular!
For me and other people who cannot contain their love for curry, even the entrance is welcoming at this dream theme park called "Curry Land," with curry from all around Japan there to greet us.
※ The ranking of recommended curry changes every monthThe shelves are packed and lined with pouch-curries and divided by the region that they come from. From Hokkaido all the way to Okinawa, they boast an immense selection of curries from all prefectures around Japan!
>>next page
This is the quintessential Hokkaido curry: soup curry! There's even a region that serves beer curry...
The 18+ only curry looks like the real deal... it seems that the spiciness in it is not your everyday level of spice!
Nevertheless, there are so many options I want pick, from northern Japan all the way to the south! It's too hard to choose! And it seems that way for every other person that steps foot in here too - they are spoilt for choice. If you find yourself in the same boat, then be sure to talk with the owner, Inomata, or his wife.It was really fun to hear about how they select their stock. The owner has tasted them all, so he was able to kindly explain the local ingredients used in the curries, as well as their flavours, the best ways to eat them, and so on. (He even went to the trouble to take out his iPhone and send me photos! So nice! *cries*)
Oh, and Curry Land even sell their own original cute iPhone cases! The owner of this dream land really doesn't miss a thing when it comes to great service, does he? I was impressed by his unbelievable way of interacting with people!
The design is of curry pouring from pouches - as expected of a shop that specialises in just that!
The shelves are lined with the chosen ones - those curries specially picked by the owner who has tasted them all. They're all so fascinating! Everyone in the editing team followed me as I went back and forth multiple times contemplating which to buy.Customers that travel long distances to come here and get their hands on rare gems that they can only find here have received lots of interview requests from the media who have heard the rumours. Curry Land has become so much the talk of the town that people are even calling it one of Asakusa's unique tourist spots. And there's a happening related to that surrounding a certain local curry! It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that this certain curry changed Inomata's life forever.
>>next page
Inomata has always loved curry. One day, he encountered the curry pictured above on a trip to Shimane Prefecture - Okuizumo Wagyu Curry. It was when he took a bite of this that it hit him, "There was always something as delicious as this in the world?"
From that time forward, he thought to himself, "There must be other curries like this out there too!" So he took his car and went on a pilgrimage around Japan to seek out local retort-pouch curries! Even in this day and age where you can get whatever you want with a click of a button online, Inomata took it upon himself to visit all of those places by foot to check them himself with his own eyes and mouth. To clinch local pouch-curries is his aesthetic. You can be nothing but amazed by his passion and the lightness in his footwork!
The carefully selected local ingredients, the retort-pouch curries and their high quality ingredients - which you can't imagine combining with anything else - and testing of unknown flavours and spices. There's an enjoyment in all of these things. I eat quite a lot different of pouch-curries - I buy them myself, and I even receive them from fans who know that I love curry too. But this shop that specialises in local retort-pouch curry is something else. There were many curries I had never seen before coming here. I couldn't compose myself.
While receiving advise from the owner and his wife, I picked up 3 curries! The editing team got some too, so in the next article we are going to showcase our curry party and taste-report! We'll be eating all kinds of original curry goodies, all from the curry haven that is Curry Land, so please look forward to it♡
Lastly, I have some personal news that made me super happy! The owner's wife, Sanae, knew who I was! I'm truly honoured and over the moon that the wife at the famous curry sanctum that is Curry Land, which has been covered even by the media, knew about me!
I feel I have spread the word about my ordinary love for curry (well, maybe not so ordinary). The fire I have for my love of curry is burning even brighter now that I've been able to dig deeper into retort-pouch curries. I have come to realise that it's my duty to report on even more curries that are out there in the world. And I'm going to do it!

【Tokyo Cafe】Visit the café that has an original menu which gives you great impact volume 4 Asakusa “Tengoku”
When I was walking in the town, I heard the conversation that made me a little scared.
“I'm heading to the “Tengoku(heaven)” first.” The guy who looks like about seventy years old said. He was walking really cheerfully. I was curious about him, and decided to chase after him, then he entered the café called “Tengoku(heaven).”
The heaven’s door was a small glassed door. There were lovely retro plastic food figures decorated in the entrance. Asakusa which is considered to be the town that has a lot of good places to eat is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Tokyo. This little and warm appearance café is an oasis for many tourists who try to take breaks from walking in this town.
Inside the “Tengoku,” you can smell something sweet. The feast of this paradise is a special pancake which has a burnt in mark of “Tengoku.” (550yen)
They start mixing the ingredients after getting an order, and cook on copper sheets. It tastes crunchy on the outside, and fluffy inside. When I put butter and maple syrup, the flavor of the milk gets stronger. The owner, Rumi Ueno was particular about this orthodox pancake. The taste of this pancake really made me relieve and reminds me of my mom who made pancake for snack when I was little.
“Tengoku’s special hotdog” appeared on my table with great impact. The sausage sticking out from the hotdog bun is about 25 centimeters long!
when you bite it, the juice spreads in your mouth with the bun. The crunchy texture’s of sausage really goes with moist bread. There are four toppings that you can choose from. This nostalgic and addictive taste plain hotdog made me want to get another one to take for strolling in this town.
You can have good luck if you drink up the coffee which comes with the set menu.
There are two characters saying good fortune in the bottom of coffee cup. If you get disappointed by drawing bad luck on your oracle at Sensouji temple, you will be saved by this good surprise. This very detailed hospitality is exactly like you are in heaven.
If you are in trouble not knowing what to get for souvenir, you should get the original merchandise that you only can get in here!
“I’ve been to heaven five times this month.” “What about you? How many times you’ve been to heaven?” People were talking something like that with Edo dialect. The café where people having this funny conversations is like a “gourmet’s nirvana” which is totally different world from the hustle and bustle sightseeing place.

Hoshinoya Tokyo, a traditional ryokan in Otemachi, has announced the New Year’s Kabuki Plan, a two-day, one-night stay from January 5 until January 7, 2023. During the Edo Period, citizens enjoyed watching Kabuki plays during the New Year’s holidays, often sipping tea at connected teahouses. This event will invite visitors to experience what this was like, complete with traditional food and decorations. Watching Kabuki was a chic way for those in Edo to ring in the new year. Theater teahouses were also a popular gathering place–along with arranging tickets, the teahouses offered plot notes, tea, sweets, boxed lunches, snacks, and other drinks.**Hiroshi Fujita, Yoshihide Tomizawa (2012) / The Updated Kabuki Dictionary, Kashiwa Shobo
Relax Before Enjoying Tea and a Play
Guests are invited to relax in the Ochanoma (Living Room) Lounge, decorated to look like a traditional teahouse with fans, ukiyo-e prints, and formal curtains. Hanabiramochi, or rice cakes with flower petals, will be served with green tea. These rice cakes are said to date back to the New Year’s tradition of eating hard foods like daikon and rice cakes in the hopes of prolonging one’s life. Characterized by its curious burdock root aroma, the cakes are sweetened with white miso bean paste. Enjoy a Post-Viewing Mont Blanc Shaped like Soba with Sweet Dessert Wine
At theater teahouses in the Edo period, sake, snacks, and desserts were served one after another. During this special event, a menu inspired by this practice and prepared by Hoshinoya Tokyo Executive Chef Noriyuki Hamada will be served! Soba noodles were often served after a play in the past. Inspired by this tradition, Mont Blanc made with chestnut paste and sponge cake will be served up to look like this popular dish. Paired with a dessert wine aged in oak barrels, the sweet will be served in a traditional lacquerware basket. In addition, the dish will be paired with Wasabi Pralines, Shichimi Meringue, and Ginger Pate de Fruits.Take a Rickshaw to the Kabuki-za Theater
Guests will be taken on an Edo-style tour on their way to the Kabuki-za Theater. Passing through the Nihonbashi area, the first stop will be the Fukutoku Shrine. It’s said that Hidetada Tokugawa paid a visit to and praised the shrine on New Year’s Day in 1614. The next shrine on the docket, Hodo Inari Jinja, was enshrined in Edo Castle during the Edo period to protect the heir to the Tokugawa family. It’s said that the shrine provides blessings for child rearing, matchmaking, and business prosperity. This tour will provide a more elegant way to explore Tokyo as guests enjoy exposition from their chauffeur. To make the rickshaw ride even more enjoyable, guests can rent kimonos for an extra charge. Tsuchiya Kaban is known around the world for its Japanese craftsmanship and handmade goods. The company has now opened TSUCHI-YA, a glassware specialty store! The shop opened on Asakusa’s Kappabashi Dougu Street on August 18, 2022. At TSUCHI-YA, visitors can purchase the works of over 35 glass artisans from 13 prefectures throughout Japan, all of whom are dedicated to the art of making beautiful things. Aiming to share the beauty of glass with customers, many pieces on display are perfect for daily use.
In addition to unique handmade glassware, the collection also features faceted glassware, each incorporating advanced techniques to bring traditional designs into the modern age. The techniques used to create each piece of glass are also incredibly diverse. Along with faceted glass, visitors can find sandblasted glass, which uses sand to create intricate patterns, as well as blown glass. Also keep an eye out for sustainable items such as Ryukyu glass, a traditional Okinawan craft made from recycled glass melted from used bottles, and coasters made from wood, leather and other scrap materials. The interior design for the shop was done by the creative team that also handles Tsuchiya Kaban stores. The dark tones found on the first floor make the transparent glassware shine. The second floor is an upscale gallery with a white ceiling, walls, and floor, featuring colorful faceted glasses and accessories, as well as vases, art, and more. TSUCHI-YA embodied Tsuchiya Kaban’s passion for craftsmanship and will continue to share incredible handcrafted Japanese glassware. The company wants to bring Japanese politeness to the world.
