MOSHI MOSHI COOKING: Learn How to Make Wheat, Dairy and Egg Free Okonomiyaki With Rice Powder

21.March.2018 | FEATURES / FOOD

Even in Japan, okonomiyaki is the soul food of the people that live in the Kansai region. It looks like a pancake, but inside it’s filled with cabbage and stuffed with ingredients meat and seafood. This Japanese food is eaten drizzled with rich sauce and mayonnaise.

Today, we will see how to make okonomiyaki using “Okome de Tsukutta Mix Kona” from TOPVALU which uses neither wheat nor gluten.

Our cooks Ema and Eri are from Kyoto. The taste of okonomiyaki is one familiar to them since childhood, so they were really excited for this! They’re both confident in their ability since they normally take turns when cooking.

The two of them will challenge themselves to making two types of okonomiyaki: a recommended recipe written on the powder mix packaging, and another made with tofu. Let’s get cooking!

First, here’s the ingredients for the recommended recipe.

・Powdered Mix: Approx. ¼ cup (30g)

・Water: 50g

・Bonito Powder: 1 tbsp (3g)

・Cabbage: 70g

・Yamaimo: Approx. 2 tbsp (15g)

・Squid: 30g

・Pork Belly (sliced): 40g

・Red Pickled Ginger: Approx. 1 tsp (5g)

・Dried Bonito Shaving: To taste

First, shred the cabbage and grate the yamaimo. Add the powdered mix, bonito powder and water into a large bowl and mix well. Then add the cabbage, yamaimo, squid thinly sliced to 1cm, and red pickled ginger and mix well to combine. The powdered mix is used as a base for rice flour so it will make your okonomiyaki cook plump and fluffy.

Next, here’s the ingredients for the tofu recipe.

・Powdered Mix: Approx. ¼ cup (30g)

・Water: 50g

・Bonito Powder: 1 tbsp (3g)

・Cabbage: 70g

・Yamaimo: Approx. 2 tbsp (15g)

・Drained Tofu: ¼ block (approx. 70g)

・Shirasu: 2 tbsp (approx. 20g)

・Pork Belly (sliced): 40g

・Red Pickled Ginger: Approx. 1 tsp (5g)

・Negi: To taste

Just like the first recipe, start off by shredding the cabbage and grating the yamaimo. Ema is dexterous with a knife. She chopped up the cabbage skillfully and efficiently.

It’s important to measure the ingredients out correctly to make it delicious. Be sure to use some kitchen scales to measure the amounts accurately. The powdered mix used in this recipe contains no egg, dairy, wheat, peanut, soba, ebi or crab. Instead, it’s made from ingredients such as rice flour and sprouted brown rice. What’s more is that it’s produced at a factory in Akita, so you can feel at ease using it in your cooking.

Add the powdered mix, bonito powder and water into a large bowl and mix well. Then, add in the drained tofu and mix thoroughly into the raw mixture. As a side note, you can dry tofu easily by wrapping it with 2 sheets of kitchen roll and placing it into the microwave (500w) for 1 minute 30 seconds.

Next, add your cabbage, yamaimo, shirasu and red pickled ginger and mix well to combine.

Once your mix is done, it’s time to start frying. Wait for the hot plate to heat up before adding oil (to taste). Wait for the oil to get hot and then spread your mixture on top of the place into a round shape.

Spread the sliced pork on to the mixture and cook for 3-minutes. Ema and Eri were super hungry and couldn’t wait for them to be finished after hearing the juicy and delicious sounds.

After the 3-minutes have passed, flip and cook for a further 2-minutes. The powdered mix is made from rice and not wheat flour, so it can be tricky to tell when it’s cooked. So a top tip is to be sure to cook it for the same amount time as specified in the recipe!

Once it’s cooked through well, add sauce and mayonnaise to taste. Add dried bonito shavings to the okonomiyaki made using the recommended recipe and ponzu sauce and negi to the tofu okonomiyaki.

Our fluffy, well cooked and tasty-looking okonomiyaki are done!

Hungry Ema and Eri munched and made short work of their okonomiyaki in no time at all♪ The powdered mix made with rice flour makes the mixture springy and plump! The tofu okonomiyaki was Eri’s favourite because of its soft texture. “Try making this yourself at home!” the lively bunch said.

The mixture used today was the “TOPVALU Okome de Tsukutta Mix Kona” (150g, ¥213 tax included). It can be used for numerous recipes as well as okonomiyaki such as deep frying. You can buy it from any AEON Group store in Japan, so be sure to try it out yourself.

Use this recipe and throw an okonomiyaki party for your friends and family.

  • 【Tokyo Stroll】The cafe that you want to visit to see someone #5: “café Benisica” – The Birthplace of Pizza Toast

    21.February.2018 | FEATURES / FOOD / SPOT

“A café that has continued to be loved for 60 years”   In this entry to my café series, I visited the familiar Yurakucho, the center of modern Tokyo culture. This year, long-standing café Benisica turned 61-years-old. I stopped by to have my fill of their amazing pizza toast. The café is a 2-minute walk from Hibiya Station via Tokyo Metro lines, and 4-minutes on foot from Yurakucho Station via JR lines, making it an easy place to get to.   The café opened all those years ago in response to the large number of cinemas and theatres dotted around Yurakucho. They wanted to create place where people could relax on their way back from seeing a show.   Upon arrival, you can still observe stylish older ladies strolling into the café. The scene hasn’t changed one bit which I found to be wonderful.   Café Benisica is famous for being the birthplace of original pizza toast. They even have a sign at the entrance telling you that! Eye-catching!!!   Without further ado, let’s head on in♪   I take one step into the café, and... Huh? What’s this?!   That’s right. At Benisica, you can enjoy vacuum brewed coffee. This was the first time I had seen a vacuum coffee maker up close, so I gazed at them with a keen interest.   Inside, I gazed at the café décor and objects scattered around of Hibiya, a town which changes with the times. You can feel the weight of the times instore – all the wonderful items look stylish simply by being placed in there! The café interior is a collection of warm colours. It’s a place where you can relax and feel comfortable.   This is Benisica’s famous pizza toast, costing ¥950 (tax included). They have plenty of set menus, and drink menus are ¥1,350. The story behind the pizza toast was how if you didn’t go to an Italian restaurant back then, you couldn’t eat pizza. So, they took pizza and turned it into something you can eat casually – toast. Since then, it has continued to be a much-loved menu item with customers for almost half a century.     After hearing the story, I took no time at all ordering my own pizza toast! To drink, I chose a strawberry shake. Just so you know, the shake doesn’t come in set orders, so be careful.   Thick servings of cheese and put onto chunky slices of toast. “The soul of the pizza toast is in the cheese!” is what you’ll be saying at its presence on the toast. Its generous serving makes this pizza toast suitable not just as a light meal, but even a whole lunch. As well as the standard ingredients like salami, onion and bell peppers, I was happy that there were mushrooms too.   The bread’s texture is fluffy! I was hungry, so I made short work of it. Thank you for the meal.   This is the owner of Benisica, Setsuko Murakami, who told me the story of the café. She’s a very wonderful person who loves her husband very much. Not only did she tell me about the café – I got to hear about her husband’s way of living and thoughts too. The words of people that have walked the road of life longer than me are deep and enlightening.   I stored the owner’s story safely onto the shelves in my heart. The next time something happens, I’ll rely on those special words she graciously taught me and work hard.

  • 【Tokyo Stroll】 The café that you want to visit to see someone #4 Cats working at Shinjuku-sanchome’s Café Arles

    21.December.2017 | FEATURES / FOOD

"Good service, a jolly owner and cute cats – this café is sure to heal you!"   I’m Ema Tanioku and today I’ll be introducing you to yet another café in Tokyo as the fourth edition of my series "The café that you want to visit to see someone". Today I’ll be reporting about my visit to Café Arles which can be found at Shinjuku-sanchome. Ever since hearing that there were cats at this café, I’ve been set on going 〜♪♪   The café is very easy to access. To get to there, you can take the Toei Shinjuku line to Shinjuku-sanchome. From here, you can get to the café within a five-minute walk. Walking around the Shinjuku Suehirote theatre, the café soon came into sight. Somehow, I could sense the presence of cats just from the atmosphere... There it was! The entrance to the café was decorated with many ornaments of cats and dogs. I don’ know why but I was filled with excitement before even having entered. As soon as I entered, I immediately spotted a cat. I was then greeted by the cat’s master who had a sweeping grin across his face and was wearing a hat with a cat broach. I could really feel his love for cats ♪♪ I took a sweeping glance over the café – cats, cats and more cats - there were so many cat-themed goods everywhere! Apart from cats goods, the master also collects clown goods and displayed everything all huddled together to decorate the café. Although this was my first time at Café Arles, I immediately felt right at home as a warm feeling grew within me. I asked the master what got him into the café business and I was surprised by his response. It all started when the master was working at a mahjong parlour, where a person they knew asked them to start up a café. The master then thought about the numerous paintings he had collected and how he was in search of a place to display them. The idea of choosing his own music, menu and decorating a café interior to his own taste really struck a chord with him. There are many paintings displayed in the café. Amongst these are some by modern artist Tomomi Kondo, who made the paintings “please your master” and “cool your thighs”, which feature the kaban neko (café cats) Ishimatsu and Jirocho, who are “working hard” by lazing around. Café Arles is fun and draws in even more fun. The atmosphere is filled with the love and enjoyment of the customers. That’s why I immediately felt so at home as soon as I entered. You can easily spend a long time here. I asked the master what he recommends from his menu. His response? “My recommendation is what you want to eat the most!” he said wisely. I felt like eating Napolitan spaghetti and so that is what I ordered! (Price: ¥720 including tax) It came with banana and giant corn ❤ – this excellent service made me so happy! The gentle flavour of this homemade dish was delicious and I could really taste the Showa-retro Napolitan flavour to it. The drink, soup and salad services available gives this meal a perfect score for portion size satisfaction! The master allowed me to take his café cat Jirocho-kun out for a walk. This was the first time I'd ever walked a cat – a new, fresh experience! Jirocho-kun is a very calm and obedient cat, so we had a lovely stroll together. Speaking of which, Jirocho-kun loves his owner so much that he runs to meet him whenever he hears his car pull up at the shop. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the café. “I enjoyed every minute of it” explained the master happily. The master created a place where everyone can be happy and in return everyone supports him. Perhaps this cycle is the motivational force that has kept and will continue to push this café to live and thrive.   I’m glad I came to this café today and met such a special person. I want to come here again and have another chat with the master!

  • 【Tokyo Stroll】The cafe you that you want to visit to see someone #3 “Galant” —a retro café in Ueno

    15.November.2017 | FEATURES / FOOD / SPOT

“It’s a mysterious café vacuum sealed with an energy that feels like it’s the time of the Japanese economic miracle”   We’re at the third installment of this series where we take a stroll to old-fashioned cafes filled with a sense of nostalgia. I, Ema Tanioka, will be introducing to you another retro café that I am in love with. Today, we go to “Galant” in Ueno, a town where the Showa mood still lingers.   Galant has continued to be loved by many people since it opened its doors back in 1977. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the popular café. “Galant” sounds a little space-y, don’t you think? It’s a little different from the norm. When I enquired to the staff about the origin of the café’s name, they told me that it comes from the Mitsubishi Galant as the owner is a fan of cars. To think that a car’s name became the name of a café! But it has a ring to it and is easy to remember, so it might actually be a huge success.   Anyway, without further ado, let’s make our way there! Galant is on the 2nd floor of this building. As you head up the stairs, it no longer felt like I was in the real world. A completely different world opened before me. Because of the entrance’s chic brickwork, I was surprised by the dazzling lights floating inside. And here! Here too! There was so much sparkle. The first thing to peak my interest was the uniform the staff were wearing. So cute... You don’t see that red & yellow combination much these days. It helped amplify that retro mood of the café even more.   The male staff wore red & black! Black was the base colour and had that well defined, guy-like feel to it. Together with the checkered vests, it completed that retro look. It was wonderful. The café was also playing popular Showa era songs. I really felt like I had stepped back in time.       And then... and then! The menu arrived! The most popular item on the menu is the chocolate parfait (¥900 tax incl.). It was absolutely stuffed with cream all the way to the middle. For people who love sweet things this is an irresistible delight. By the way, I must ask, what do you do when it comes to the cherry on top of the parfait? The truth is, I absolutely love parfaits, but I’m really not into the cherry – I usually leave it until the end. Even though it looks so cute on the parfait... Another item is the cream soda (¥750 tax incl.). When going to a café, you just have to get a cream soda!! It’s because you don’t see them around much besides at cafes and family restaurants, so I’m the person that ends up ordering one unintentionally when if I see it on the menu. There’s a nice fat serving of ice cream in there. It’s a drink you can enjoy that has the aesthetic of a dessert. The melon soda is crystal clear like a precious gem. The best part about cream soda is how the ice cream slowly melts into the drink. It’s pretty fun to watch! Galant is the kind of café where the more you get to know it, the more you start to love it. Its fans have been supporting it for many years, and even when I become a grandma in the future, I reckon it’ll still be bustling all the same.

  • 【Tokyo Stroll】The cafe that you want to visit to see someone #2 “Nanatsumori”—An Attractive Cafe in Kōenji

    26.July.2017 | FEATURES / FOOD / SPOT

"A coffee lounge where you can step back in time and spend it in luxury."   Showa, retro-style coffee shops that are comfortable and echo a sense of nostalgia. I, Ema Tanioka, love going to these kinds of cafés. I hope to make you want to visit a place like this, the kind of place where you want to meet with someone.   For today's stroll, I went to Kōenji, a conveniently accessible location from the city just one stop from Shinjuku on the Chūō Line. When you think of Kōenji, you think of its plentiful second hand clothes shops and shops selling miscellaneous goods, among others, all with their individual traits. It's the kind of town where you're sure to discover something new each time you visit. This time around, I went to "Nanatsumori," a café that has a retro look to it from the outside. It was built in Showa 53 (the year 1978). I heard that the building was originally used as a tea house. At the front of the café is an old-fashioned shaved ice machine. I couldn't help turning it. Upon entering, you can see the interior of the café has weathered. It has an atmosphere reminiscent of the Showa era, like you've just stepped back in time. No matter where you take a photograph in the café it will look beautiful.   There were lots of mysterious ornaments inside; I couldn't help but reach my hands out to touch everything♪ But, in the end, I didn't know what any of the things I'm holding in the photos were. How on earth do you use this stuff...?!   While pondering that, just simply gazing around the interior of the café filled me with a feeling of excitement.

I ordered Omurice (¥1,185 w/tax) and a Jumbo Purin (¥625 w/tax) for this visit.   I tucked into my omurice first. But you don't eat omurice with ketchup here. Instead, it comes with a traditional style seasoning. The rice was mixed with beef, burdock, and enoki mushrooms, as well as a salty-sweet seasoning that tasted like shigureni. On top of the rice was an omelette that had fresh cream inside. It was wonderful.   The traditional style rice and the sweet-tasting egg went perfectly together! I cleared my plate very quickly. For dessert, I went with my absolute favourite—custard purin♪   It was served in a cute plate that looked like a goldfish bowl. It looked very photogenic. The purin itself wasn't the soft kind. It was an old-style purin with elasticity and a gentle flavour. The caramel sauce was delicious too with its ever so slightly bitter taste. I could have eaten more than one. I also ordered black tea to go with it.   The menu has plenty of other homemade sweets too! I definitely want to try ordering something else the next time I go. Time passes slowly and restfully at "Nanatsumori," with its retro atmosphere. You can spend a happy time there surrounded by its gorgeous interior that makes it seem as if you've stepped back in time.   It made me think "I want to spend some luxurious time here together with someone special."   The next time you head on out to Kōenji, be sure to visit here.

“Although there are many great things about chain stores, the café has their own dream.”   The café that reminds me of Showa era is somehow nostalgic and comfy inside. I, Emma Tanioku, who love to visit the new café restaurants is going to introduce the café that will make you want to see particular person in their café. Today, I came to Jinbo-cho that is good access from middle of Tokyo, and you don’t have to change the train line from Shibuya station. Jinbo-cho is socially known as the town which has many secondhand bookstores, it is actually the town for gourmets as well. There are many hidden old-established restaurants in this great town.   I want to introduce this café that I was especially curious about. “Sabouru” which you can say its representative retro cafe. It locates right there from the exit A7 in Jinbo-cho train station. This 62 years historical café has established in 1955. In front of this café which appears to look like small mountain hut, there is a red public telephones surrounded by some flowers, plants and a totem pole. This makes me want to take a picture in front of there. This public phone is actually functional, so I heard some people are still using it. There are floor first, semi basement and mezzanine inside. It is little dark inside, but you can still enjoy reading books.Either if you come here alone or with your friends, you can spend the relaxed time. The miscellaneous goods that decorated inside the café were donated by customers. Even though they are all different kinds of souvenirs from all over the world, they look like it's coordinated perfectly.I bet the customers who are big fan of this café decide to buy the good souvenirs which are going to match with this store’s atmosphere. For your information, you can decorate your souvenirs inside the cafe even if you are not regular customer.

Today I ordered some of their popular menu: sandwiches, fresh strawberry juice and cream soda (soda float), and the spaghetti Neapolitan from the branch store called “Sabouru 2” located next to each other. The first one which served on my table was “Fresh Strawberry Juice (500yen include tax).” It is not only looking cute, but it is also really juicy and tasty. It taste like smoothie that mixed small blocks of ice and fresh juice. They are also being particular about ice. The owner, Fumio Suzuki told me that the ice he got from an ice shop every morning does’t melt as easy as the regular ice. It surely lasts the rich flavor for long minutes. The food I ate with the juice is “mix sand(600yen include tax).” There are orthodox ham and cucumber sandwich, fresh made tomato sandwich and fluffy egg omelet sandwich. The taste reminds me of the one which my mom made when I was little.     The next one served on my table was spaghetti Neapolitan which specialty food from “Sabouru 2”. It is such a huge portion for only 650yen(include tax)! This spaghetti is regular size, not a large helping, and comes with mini salad. The reason why it is so many is because they cooked it without using measure spoon and it is slowly getting huge. Even though many students or workers can eat it up. It is absolutely tasty as well! It is cooked with many ingredients include mash rooms, onions and bacon. It is quite simple cooked with ketchup. It was really hard to eat the things up since they serve quite large amount of food! I barely finished eating up with three other shooting members. Spaghetti Neapolitan is original menu for “Sabouru 2,” but if you order alcohol at “Saburu” at night they are able to deliver the food menu(Some menus only) from “Sabouru 2.”

Desert for the last is cream soda(580yen include tax). Cream soda is typically green, but you can choose out of four different kinds;red, blue, yellow and green at Sabouru. The cream soda that appeared on my table was shiny and cute. Each of colors has different flavor. Yellow tastes lemon, and blue taste blue Hawaii. You can enjoy sharing and tasting different flavor with your friend. The owner, Fumio, told me that he is going to think of another kind of flavor. I wonder what is going to be the next color. This made me really look forward to visiting Sabouru.   The cafe “Sabouru” has been loved by a lot of people. I took a picture with very sweet owner, Fumio at last. He told me the history of Sabouru, served us their coffee, and he gave us a candy after the interview!   “Although there are many great things about chain stores, the café has their own dream.”   Fumio, the owner who have spent more than sixty years with this café said softly. It made me want to the other menu in this café, and I also really want to see Fumio again. Next time I visit here, I will bring some survivors for him.

  • Sendai Stroll: Taking a Walk Around Japan’s City of Trees With Chinese Influencer Etsuna

    27.November.2020 | FEATURES / SPOT

Sendai, the capital of Miyagi Prefecture and the largest city in Japan's Tohoku region, is a two-hour bullet train ride from Tokyo. The city has earned the nickname Mori no Miyako, or 'City of Trees,' due to the abundant rows of zelkova trees lining many of its streets. It bustles with charm and is enjoyed by locals and tourists for its history, sights, and events, such as its associations with the Japanese regional ruler Date Masamune, the famous Sendai Tanabata Festival, and more. However, there are many other incredible locations that Sendai has to offer that aren't as well known as the popular sites, so today we are joined by Etsuna who is giving us the latest in what can be found in the city.

    Along The Coast

The coast of Sendai was struck by a tsunami when the Great East Japan Earthquake struck back on in March 2011. Today, the area is continuing its re-development efforts. New facilities have and are being built, including plenty of new spots the area never had before. Sendai is home to a memorial hall for remembering those affected during the disaster which is a must-visit if travelling to Sendai.

    Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium

Feel the sea breeze and ocean water of Tohoku against your skin Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium opened in 2015 as the larrgest aquarium in the Tohoku region. The first floor is themed on the waters of Tohoku where many rare aquatic species from the Sanriku Coast are housed. The second floor is centred on sea creatures found in the oceans around the world such as tropical fish, jellyfish, marine mammals, and other familiar faces.   Visitors can even meet ascidians there which are famous in the Sanriku Coast. The large fish tanks let in a lot of natural light, recreating the beauty of the Sanriku sea. There's also a special spot where you can get up close to some of the fish! The aquarium offers an optional program where visitors can feed the penguins. "It's a pretty big aquarium," said Etsuna. "It was great to see all of the different things they have on display. I had a lot of fun feeding the penguins too!"   Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium Address: 4-6 Nakano, Miyagino-ku, Sendai-shi, Miyagi Prefecture Opening Hours: 10:00-17:00 (May change depending ont he season) No Fixed Holidays TEL: 022-355-2222 Access: 10-minutes by shuttle bus (free ride) from JR Nakanosakae Station Price: Adults ¥2,200 / Seniors, High School and Junior High School Children ¥1,600 / Elementary School Children ¥1,100 / Infants ¥600 (All Tax-Inclusive) Official Website: http://www.uminomori.jp/umino/

The restaurant's name, Sushi Yoshi, suggests that it's a sushi restaurant, but they actually serve common delicacies like rice bowls and set meals.

The school is now open as a memorial to preserve the memories of those who survived. The tsunami that struck after the earthquake made it to the second floor of the school. These first two floors have been kept untouched and are as they were on the day. There are photos as well as video footage exhibited on the fourth floor where the tsunami didn't reach. • My Recommended Outfits: Enjoy the Lolita Style Throughout the Year With These 4 Looks

    30.September.2020 | FASHION / FEATURES

ASOBINEXT is a new project launched by event management and talent agency ASOBISYSTEM, which is known for managing artists like Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. The project aims to create next generation icons who will promote their unique personalities and outlooks to the world using social media and in turn bring about new forms of culture. As part of ASOBINEXT, MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON will be publishing content from each talent that is tied to ASOBINEXT in the form of their favourite and recommended things. In this edition, we are joined by ASOBINEXT's Izumi Aine, who performs on live streams and is active on social media in the hopes of becoming an idol. Today, she is showcasing a selection of different outfits.   The four looks she has put together are focused on the jumper skirt, a versatile clothing item that can be worn in a multitude of ways, no matter the season.

Black Half-Sleeve Blouse x Jumper Skirt

Both the blouse and skirt have a black base. This, together with showing a bit of arm and leg, keeps the look tight without being over the top. And I keep the look fresh by styling my hair in curled twintails!

White Long-Sleeve Blouse x Jumper Skirt

A highlight of the jumper skirt is how you can change the impression you'll leave by having the blouse just one tone. A black one piece, too, can give you a cute look like that of sweet and classic lolita fashion. I tried combining that with curly hair and a lace rose headdress. Going half-sleeve can be chilly in the spring and autumn, so I recommend this one for those seasons!

    Jumper Skirt x Trench Coat

If we're talking lolita coats, then you often get those with fur on the sleeves and collar, but putting a look together with a trench coat looks great too. Coats with lots of fur on them and warm, fluffy, and cute, but they can be difficult to pull off well. Trench coats, on the other hand, let you have the front unzipped and open so you can show off a one piece. And if it gets cold, you can zip it up. This means there's two different ways you can wear a trench coat, making it very versatile. You can clad yourself in one during the cold spring and autumn days to keep warm.

    Jumper Skirt x Grey Vest

"Thank you for visiting So-And-So Tower today. The observation deck is located on the 7th and top floor, up 356m high. It takes 120 seconds to reach it." You can just hear the announcement with this look which gives off elevator-girl-in-front-of-the-department-store vibes. If you're tired of the same old lolita looks, or are stuck on how to change things up, then I recommend this one to you.

    Bonus: Jumper Skirt x Cardigan

For this bonus look I put my all into creating a casual lolita outfit. Wearing the cardigan without having a pannier on brings volume to the skirt and brings together its design, making it a lolita outfit that's not too in-your-face. This one's perfect for beginners who want to try out lolita fashion but are still a little apprehensive.

What does lolita fashion mean to Izumi Aine?

I put together four looks plus a bonus one for you all today. What did you think? When I was little, I was influenced by a manga series called Hime Gal Paradise which I used to read in Ciao Magazine. It opened my eyes to lolita fashion and all of its enchanting lace designs and patterns.   In today's internet society, the world has become a place where you can see things you don't want to, like mental abuse and insults, which I feel is making it harder to shout about the things you love. But it's been a while since smartphone have been around now, so I feel the time has come to talk about the things you love and respect our individualities! That's the kind of world I want to aim for! And my first step towards that is promoting lolita fashion.   Brand featured in this article: axes femme / BODYLINE
Izumi Aine Worked as a model from a young age. Appears in newspaper ads, TV VTR, fashion catalogues, and other places. She stopped her activities for a while to focus on her studies, but after graduating school, she is now back at it after passing the ASOBINEXT auditions. She dreams of becoming an idol and is taking lessons and performing live on livestreams towards that goal. "Once in a lifetime" is her motto, and she lives up to that by challenging herself at things she wants to do. For her, enjoying life means you're winning.
  • My Film Recommendation: Pulled Into the Story by Minami Hamabe’s Character in Let Me Eat Your Pancreas

    29.September.2020 | FEATURES / MOVIE

ASOBINEXT is a new project launched by event management and talent agency ASOBISYSTEM, which is known for managing artists like Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. The project aims to create next generation icons who will promote their unique personalities and outlooks to the world using social media and in turn bring about new forms of culture. As part of ASOBINEXT, MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON will be publishing content from each talent that is tied to ASOBINEXT in the form of their favourite and recommended things. Today, we are joined by ASOBINEXT's Haruna Tamura, an actor and YouTuber, whose film recommendation in this edition is the live-action adaptation of Let Me Eat Your Pancreas.

    Synopsis

The story is centred on two individuals who, at the start of their relationship had never really spoken about anything in particular... initially. "Me," the male protagonist in the film, comes across a diary in a hospital waiting room and discovers it belongs to his classmate Sakura Yamauchi. He learns in the diary that she has a pancreatic illness. https://twitter.com/kimisui_movie/status/844735229902274560?s=21  https://twitter.com/kimisui_movie/status/879600249500598273?s=21  Sakura is a very popular girl in Me's class, and he never thought she would be suffering from such a fatal illness. She had kept it a secret, with only the people in her family knowing about it. And so begins a bittersweet love story between the plain and simple Me and Sakura, his complete opposite who is the popular one of the class. https://twitter.com/kimisui_movie/status/868708467804168192?s=21

    Cast

There are different cast members in Let Me Eat Your Pancreas for playing both the present and past selves of the characters.   The characters of the past, 12 years ago, are played by the following: Minami Hamabe as Sakura Yamauchi, Takumi Kitamura as Me/Haruki Shiga, Karen Otomo as Kyoko, and Yuma Yamoto as Gamu-kun.   This film marked the first time Minami and Takumi had starred in film together, and it was a huge success amongst viewers who shed tears at the relationship between the ill-stricken girl, and the boy who found her diary that details her experiences of living with said illness.   Playing the characters of the present is: Shun Oguri as Haruki Shiga, Keiko Kitagawa as Kyoko, and Yusuke Kamiji as Gamu-kun. Comments from viewers who have watched the film often pointed towards how Shun and Yusuke gave authentic performances of Haruki and Gamu-kun grown-up together, and how they Keiko Kitagawa's dress was spot on. I was drawn in by how they all knew each other at school. https://twitter.com/kimisui_movie/status/892247322234568705?s=21

    My Favourite Part

The highlight of the film for me which I want to point out to everyone is Minami Hamabe's portrayal of Sakura Yamauchi. She purposely puts energy into her performance, and that really left an impression on me. The world of the movie and the real world are two completely different things. Of course, this character doesn't really exist, but when I watched the performance I felt I understood her. There was a real affinity there. As the story progresses, so too does the illness grow more serious, so what I want is for people to pay attention to her facial expressions, her demeanour, and such, as that happens.   https://twitter.com/kimisui_movie/status/868753787149791232?s=21

    Wrapping Up

I first watched this film when I was a 3rd year high school student. Since the film is set in the same school year, the story had an even greater impact on me. I was able to learn the bittersweet-ness of romance as well as the preciousness of life. To this day, I think it remains my favourite film.   I was captured by the array of emotions that Minami Hamabe portrays in particular. There are a lot of parts that I can relate to from being a student to becoming an adult. It's a very easy story to get behind, so if you're reading this, I'd love it if you checked it out.   Minami Hamabe and Takumi Kitamura are also starring in the film Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare which is showing now too. I want to go and see it for myself to see how they have both grown.
Haruna Tamura Actor and YouTuber. He has played major roles in drama series and films and has over 1 million subscribers on his YouTube channel. He is working towards appearing at Fun Fest. He's skilled at baseball and his hobbies include watching movies and playing games.
  • Review: Miffy Café at Tokyo Solamachi®

    25.September.2020 | FEATURES / FOOD

In commemoration of Miffy's 65th anniversary, the new Miffy Café opened on the first floor of Tokyo Solamachi on September 11, 2020 and will remain open for a limited time. The café is also collaborating with Japanese illustrator Shogo Sekine. We visited the café to check out the themed menu, merchandise, and other fun things on show to see. Stepping into the café is like stepping into a picture book world. It's really colourful in there. My mother read Miffy to me when I was a child, so I was hit with a real sense of nostalgia when I entered the café. No matter your age, you're sure to enjoy your time there - that's the kind of fun atmosphere they have created.

    Terrine-Style Open Miffy Sandwich | ¥1,499

I ordered the terrine-style open Miffy sandwich and Miffy orange float from the themed menu. The open sandwich arrives in the shape of Miffy, so it almost seems a waste to eat, but it was really cute and delicious. Simply the best. It's filled with potato salad, an avocado sauce, and salmon.

    Miffy Orange Float | ¥899

The ice cream that tops the orange float is made to look like Miffy too! Snapping a photo while drinking the float is pretty Instagrammable, so it's a must when visiting. All of the items on the menu have Miffy somewhere on them, meaning anything you order is guaranteed to be kawaii. They have takeout too, which is great if you don't have much time to hang around or just don't want to dine inside. Speaking of which, each table in the café is separated with an acrylic board to protect customers during the pandemic, and all of them have super cute designs. Another photo opportunity for sure! The café sells original merchandise too. The fashion items and illustrations with English on them were designed by popular Japanese illustrator Shogo Sekine. There's a whole range of different goodies, from plush toys to fashion and more. Don't you feel happy just looking at all these colours? You'll find yourself spoilt for choice on what to buy.   The Miffy Café is open until October 18. You can book a table too, so if you're in Japan during this time, be sure to visit the café website below.   Illustrations Dick Bruna © copyright Mercis bv, 1953-2020  www.miffy.com   Model & Writer:Eri TaniokuPhoto: Haruka YamamotoTranslator: Joshua Kitosi-Isanga

I combined a cream-coloured top with white jeans♡ Simple but it flaunts self-assertiveness! The denim-on-denim creates a balance that's really cute. Adding yellow into the mix creates a happy, energetic vibe. This top has a flower pattern design which I combined with a yellow checked skirt. Don't forget to dress to impress, even if its for yourself at home.

    Green Edition

This look is so cute it makes me want to use run around with vim and vigour♡ The floral top is see-through, and the green overalls have a Mickey Mouse print on the front. Dayum, were short pants always this comfortable? This hand-knitted beret goes well with everything! The pants are green which is a hard colour to pull off. I added a baseball loose-fitting shirt on top of them with Betty Boop on it. This outfit has a hip-hop vibe to it, which looks stylish, don'tcha think?

    Pink Edition

To add a sweet colour on top of the white T-shirt I went with a pink camisole. To complete the look, I donned short pants so the look doesn't become overly-cute. I bought this pink T-shirt from Dole in Hawaii. Try combining 80's shorts pants like this with something similar yourself. The floral shirt is actually a one piece. I made use to make my bottoms and headband the same colour to balance the look. Having that mix of rough and feminine is good!

What does fashion mean to Fairy Kano?

There are a lot of clothes out there, and there are a lot of outfit combinations out there. But there's no 'right' way to do fashion. Don't just follow what's popular; put together something that makes you feel good, with your favourite colours, and create your own unique look. I believe that as long as you're happy, that's all that matters. That's something I always think about whenever I'm enjoying fashion. So let's all go with choosing what makes us happy!

  • My Band Recommendation | SEKAI NO OWARI: Captivating the Crowd in a Dreamlike World

    12.August.2020 | FEATURES / MUSIC

ASOBINEXT is a project launched by event management and talent agency ASOBISYSTEM, which is known for managing artists like Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. Today, we're taking a look at a Japanese band recommended by ASOBINEXT's Kanon Aihara, a dancer and vocalist.
My name is Kanon Aihara, and I'd like to share my perspective on why SEKAI NO OWARI is such a great band—one that was born from a desire to deliver entertainment to people through music.

    Incredible live performances

SEKAI NO OWARI's stage sets are otherworldly. They pull the crowd into a dreamlike place away from reality. I remember how moved I was being in that bright and shining place even for a moment with the towering tree, the owl, the dancing fireworks, the trains dashing past on the ceiling. How much time and effort it must have taken to create a set like that.   Band vocalist Fukase once said on a TV show that if they can't do the kinds of live performances they love, then they may as well disband. I really feel how great SEKAI NO OWARI when I see them wanting to continue making everyone smile and feel something deeply, and not compromising when it comes to doing the things they want to do.

    The music

It's truly a difficult task to understand each and every lyric; and I find it difficult to cover their music. Despite this, even if I don't understand something in a song, I find that each and every track really gets through to me.   Their music speaks to and is loved by men and women of all ages, whether it be their song RPG Ya which was used as a theme song for the Crayon Shin-chan anime series, the main theme song RAIN for the film Mary and the Witch's Flower, Sazanka which was used as the theme song for the NHK broadcast of the Winter Olympics Paralympics, and so on.   SEKAI NO OWARI - "RPG" Music Video

    The band members

SEKAI NO OWARI is formed of four members. There was actually a time when all of them shared a house together. On a TV show the band appeared on, all of the members excluding the vocalist Fukase said, "We want to create live performances that Fukase enjoys." Hearing those words really made me feel the love and connect the band has for each other.   For me, SEKAI NO OWARI is a place that lets me sees dreams. It also makes me feel strongly that I want to do the kinds of things they do too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHJKQT4A3_0 I believe that a lot of things are born from live performances when the artist and fans become one. Like SEKAI NO OWARI, I'm aiming to create live performances that are like going to a theme park too. The band are fun, cute, and cool, and are everything I aspire to be.   The one thing I always want to keep doing through music is performing live. That feeling of being one with the crowd. Seeing all of their smiles fills me with a happiness I've never felt before. Music is expression and is free to mean whatever you want. That's why the thing I want to do is to put my all into it for so that people enjoy themselves for all of time. I want to continuously think of and put out new, entertaining things in the future.
